The worst place to be vegan

for some reason in the middle of the night last night I decided to wake up and ponder the worst places to be vegan.

prison
nursing home
school cafeteria
military
hospital

and what if you were a volunteer for, say, red cross or something.  You have to eat whatever you can I suppose.

well maybe I'm wrong, maybe some of these places offer vegan food.  I just hope if I'm ever old and in a nursing home, or have an extended stay in a hospital they have some vegan food for me.

oh yeah....most breakfast places are a real bummer

I am an ovo lacto.... and I work in a hospital..l and whats worse, I work at night so the regular food is closed only the grill is open.... my only choice is a grilled cheese sandwhich.....ALL their Salads come with meat on them and the salad bar is nothing more than iceburg lettuce shreds frozen to the bottom of the container... so I ALWAYS bring my lunch.... there is NOTHING vegan to eat here.....  :o

I worked at a nursing home for four years.  I've only seen one vegetarian resident come through in the time I worked there.

She was vegetarian and it even had it in big letters on her card so that the kitchen would see it when getting her meal prepared for her, but they'd constantly send back chicken or a hamburger.  Poor lady was actually "there" enough to have it sent back.  If she wasn't all "there" I'm sure she'd be fed the food.  I had to actually feed a lot of the patients.  None of them were vegetarian, but if they were, how would anyone know if they couldn't speak?  Sure, it would be on their card but I'm sure many people would overlook it.  If the kitchen overlooked it, many of the nurses aids would too.  :-\

I think hospitals would be better than nursing homes.  I've heard Seventh Day Adventist nursing homes and hospitals are very good in vegan options though, since many of them are vegan/vegetarian and have beliefs related to that.

I guess I have been lucky so far (in my 12 years of veg*nism! :)), because there aren't a lot of places that have made me crazy with lack of options. My uni was pretty progressive, because apart from various ethnic options (Chinese, Middle Eastern, etc. which were often veg) they had a separate vegetarian station with veg options and at least one vegan option. They often tasted exactly the same as other vegan dishes-- veg stock, oregano and seasoning salt--because uni "chefs" aren't particularly known for being fabulous vegan cooks, but they were not terribly unhealthy and I survived! I actually don't know about the food at my current uni because I have never eaten there, but urban universities are getting better and better with their options.

But now that I think about it, over the last 12 years, I have found myself at various camps and retreats that have pretty awful options. Luckily, those are usually a 2- or 3-day thing, but one gets awfully sick of bread and salad. Yech.

As far as countries go, I hear that Uzbekistan and Yugoslavia are pretty terrible. Every where else I have travelled, I have persevered. Turkey was fabulous, Spain and Portugal were pretty good, even Mexico we found some good options (including soy chorizo). In France, you should mostly expect buttered vegetables and potatoes (EVEN if you say no butter!), but if you can find ratatouille or pistou (minus cheese), a vegan girl can be pretty happy! We usually try to find a place to cook a meal at least once or twice when traveling so that we can get around less friendly veg restaurant fare, so that makes it more bearable.

I did an internship at a laboratory that was on a teeny tiny island this summer.
Basically, whatever food came in on the delivery boats every Wednesday was whatever food we got.
No special requests or anything.
Luckily, since the internship and classes held there are pretty progressive and centered around animals, the environment, and sustainability, there were so many veg*ns that they always had at least vegetarian options.
And the chef was super nice and set aside a special vegan portion as well!
I was worried beforehand though, since I literally could not get any other food unless I wanted to swim for it...
