Birth Control
I have been taking a generic brand of birth control (I believe Tri-Sprintec) for the past three years.
I have had NO ill side effects. I did not gain weight, get acne (I lost some acne), I had lighter periods..
The only possible thing it did to me was maybe mood (but figuring I'm at that age where girls are normally emotion... I don't think it did)
I am stopping it as of this month... I took my last pill on Thursday. I had lost insurance for it so I am not paying 35 a month to get it... so I'm going to take a break (maybe forever?)
My only question was what to expect quitting? Am I going to get my period for longer than a week? Is it going to be freaking heavy or full of cramps? (of course after this week).
I just started today and I know it stays fine for a week... and then I'm not sure.
I've read alot of stories, I was just hoping to hear more...
and even see if anyone has had the same experience (with no side-effects ON the pill... hopefully there's none OFF the pill)
Thanks everyone!
There's an entire thread already devoted to birthcontrol that has stories you're looking for. And seriously, $35 is what some people's copay is for meds.....so it's not that bad. mho.
here's the thread: http://vegweb.com/index.php?topic=24329.0
Oh, thanks! that helps a bit... still didn't find alot of the information, but maybe someone would post...
only two stories
When I mentioned to my doctor that my insurance didn't cover birth control pills, she said that it may be covered if she prescribed it to me. She asked me if the pills helped my period cramps, and I told her that it did. So she prescribed it to me as pain relief. Then my insurance covered it. If you want to continue taking the pills, you might want to see if your doctor could do this for you.
Thanks for the suggestion. Unfortunately I don't have insurance at all. I will hopefully be getting it in January... but until then I won't..
figured I'd take a break and hope the side effects aren't bad...
I stopped taking the pill last month and haven't really had any issues so far. I started taking the pill because my periods were really painful and heavy. While on the pill, I skipped the placebo week most of the time, and when I didn't skip it I didn't really have a period, just cramps. I also didn't have any side effects besides moodiness when I was taking it. I've only had one period since I stopped taking it, and it wasn't as bad as it used to be (I suspected that changes in diet and overall health would help with my periods...although it hasn't been long enough to tell yet). I did have a weird week of cramping and feeling like crap though...at the time I thought it was a bloodless period like I had on the pill, but I got my real period a week later so it must have been ovulation or something. It hasn't affected my skin or my weight, and I think my moodiness is a little more under control (you'd have to ask my DH though).
Hope that helps!
I took BCP for about ten years. I stopped this past June because I lost my health insurance. So, I had a period in June when I finished my last pack, but then didn't have another one until October 1st! I had heard that your cycle could be off if you stop taking BCP after being on them for a long time, but I wasn't expecting nearly 3 months! Other than that, I didn't have any effects from stopping.
i used to pay 50$ for bc every month. and i had insurance. eek. ohwell. i've been off of it for almost a year. after stopping bc it gave me acne and a yeast infection. but those things will eventually go away. now i just have to deal with awful nauseating cramps again, but i have my libido back! yayyy. so taking it creates problems, stopping it creates problems, and being off of it still creates problems. you just cant win sometimes. hehe. hope things work out for you. i hope it all goes well!
Thank you everyone so much!!
I actually am supposed to start a new pack on Friday....
... so we'll see how it goes without starting one.
I'm ready for the cramps, kind of. I got raspberries and miso... which usually help me...
Thanks!
So, I stopped the bc in October... so my last period was... october, with very light spotting in November.....
but that was it.
I am eagerly awaiting it now... never thought I'd want to have my period sooo bad.. haha.
Anyone know any way to speed it up?
i don't know any way to speed it up, but i just wanted to say maybe your doctor could get you some birth control for free. when i lost my insurance for about 5 months, my doctor gave me free samples, because birth control companies gave him samples (come in packs of 1 month each) until i got my insurance back
just wanting to say that IF you wanted the birth control back, not saying your doctor would be up for that, but thought i'd share
No, I did do that before when I first started. It was really nice of them to do that...
At the moment, I want to take the break... especially now knowing my body isn't even up for making the hormones...
I want to give my body a break.
But thank you so much for the suggestion!
I went off bc in June and didn't have my period until October. You should be ok in a couple months. I know what you mean though...just waiting for it to happen is so hard...especially when it was so predictable on the pill.
It can take a while for your body to re-adjust. Some people go back to normal right away, others can take a few months. Talk to your doctor if you think it's been too long.
As tulipchick was saying earlier in the thread if the doctor prescribes the bc for another dx then maybe it can be covered by insurance. My doctor prescribed me some when I had an ovarian cyst that was causing some pain. She just listed the dx code for the cyst and insurance took care of it.

Yea, I was definitely going by your previous post for the 3 months... and read alot of other people having the same situation.
Are your periods pretty regular now?
