candida/no yeast diet. (girlie stuff)
i'm not sure if this is too much information, but, whatever. i went to my midwife today because i've had a yeast infection for the past 15 months. um. yeah. it sucks. i've gone to three doctors, paid lots of money for lab work, medications, and doctors visits, but it just keeeeeps coming back. ANYWAYS! she put me on, what seems to me, a strict diet. this is my first diet and saying no to foods is so very sad : ( I wanna hear stories of anyone else who has had to do a diet like this and what helped them through it. here are my no-nos
no...
fruit!!! : (
sugar
yeast (this includes nutritional yeast, which is an absolute staple in my normal diet)
dates
alcohol
wheat/flour
greasy foods (my boyfriend who often cooks for me is a deep fried type vegan)
The good thing is that shes so very supportive of my vegan lifestyle and even suggested things like tempeh bacon and tofu scrambles for breakfast. mmmm.
be sure to use a hair dryer to dry everything out before you put on underwear. this really helps!
also, I LOVE my thai crystal stick for deoderant. It didn't work at first, but give it time and you will only need it every other day or so. I swear I NEVER get BO any more since using and my adjusting to this.
are you sure she knows what nutritional yeast is? She may not. I have always heard that NY is even safe on a yeast free diet because it is nothing like yeast found in bread and baked goods. Those I can understand avoiding, but not NY>..especially with its all of its nutrients!
yeah, take a probiotic every day for a long time, especially since you've been on antibiotics so much. they kill the good bacteria too which may be why you keep getting infections. nothing to fight it off.
speaking of which, Im going to take mine right now!
they do make dairy free ones with veg capsules.
May I suggest the 80/10/10 diet for getting rid of candida overgrowth? It runs on the basis that candida overgrowth is due to sugar staying in the blood and the insulin in the blood not being able to take it to the cells effectively... candida is a naturally occurring yeast that is sort of a "back up" and will consume the sugar so it at least won't be present in the blood.
The reason sugar stays in the blood is not because we eat sugar, but because we eat fat. The fat sort of coats everything in the body and makes it difficult for the insulin to do its job. This keeps the sugar in the blood and allows the candida to flourish.
Then, to stop the candida overgrowth you have to avoid fat, not sugar. 80/10/10 stands for 80% carbs (mostly from fruit), 10% fat and 10% protein. So, instead of avoiding sugar, try to avoid fat. The 80/10/10 diet consists of lots of fruit and leafy greens. If you eat enough calories of fruits and leafy greens then you can have some fat, like maybe 1/2 an avovado a day, or a few nuts. Its also very strict, but in the other spectrum. Oh, and its a completely raw diet.
I just thought I'd mention it. If someone already did I apologize but I skimmed the replies and didn't notice that anyone did.
did anyone mention if your bf could be contributing to the yeast infections?
I was going to post something like this. I think that could be a major factor. If you're still having sex...it will aggravate it, and he could just be propagating the infection. ??
he actually treated himself for it in the summer, but now that we use condoms (i'm using FAM now! yay!) then it seems like that would cut out that possibility. maybe while i'm doing this big cleanse, he could treat himself again.
that would probably be a good idea, to have him treated again. did he take diflucan? b/c he can just use the creams if he isnt exhibiting any internal (stomach/ digestion) issues.
and yeah, i agree that you should make sure that it is a yeastie. there are a couple of bacterial infections, like BD said...bacterial vaginosis is one, that mimic a yeast infection.
also, is the rest of your immunity ok? ii bet if you do some of the changes suggested, you will definately notice a difference. but remember too, that candida can zap your resources (vits, minerals, iron, etc) and make you more susceptible to other infections. it can also signify other immune deficient conditions. if things persist beyond much longer (with the changes) definately bring this up w/ a doc to be sure there is nothing more serious.
A coworker of mine is on this no yeast diet.
I wanted to bake her something, because she is so sensitive to my vegan ethics, but I don't know this candida/no yeast diet well and don't know what to bake her. Any ideas, recipes?

Do these condoms have spermicide? From my experience (again, I'm the rare 1%, so keep this in mind), I notice that I tend to actually get yeast infections when I use condoms....I think it has something to do w/ the lube/talc mix they use on them. It happened 80% of the time w/ ones that had spermicide, now it only happens very occasionally....(Usually when HE provides....) Not that I'm saying, by any means, to stop using condoms, but you should keep that in mind, and perhaps look at other brands?
one more tip.....
you may need to boil your underwear! the yeast can live on the cloth even after going through the wash, especially if you don't use hot water. i'd add some baking soda to the boiling water.
make sure they are all cotton too
you could also go out and get a fresh batch! who doesn't like to get new underwear? now you have the perfect excuse!
It could be the condoms, especially if they have stupid nonoxynol-9 or whatever that lame spermicide is. Or, you could have a latex sensitivity. That's what happened to me, I thought I was getting yeast infections, but it turns out I'm allergic to latex. Big frakin bummer.
This girl I used to work with, her and her roomie were getting wicked horrible yeast infections, and they just would not go away for longer than a week or so. They finally figured out that when the went to the toilet, the crotch of their underwear was touching the outside of the"bowl" of the toilet, and then when the other one sat, it would touch hers...they spread it back and forth for almost a year!!! Ewwww. Sooo, maybe buy some new undies, and clean the hell out of your toilet. And good luck!!

i dont think its the condoms because i JUST started using them in february, before that i didnt use anything. i was on bc. i don't think its that, but this diet has really helped in keeping things at bay, and i've been trying things one at a time. like yesterday i tried coffee and that made me itchy. so i dont drink that anymore. yesterday i tried peanut butter, that made me itchy, so i dont eat that. today i'm gonna try nutritional yeast. and once i'm all done with my ovulating stuff, i'll try condoms and see how they make me feel.
thanks for all your suggestions!! over the week its made me feel so overwhelmed, but now that it's saturday i can kind of settle down and focus!!! i just want this to go away!!

Seconded, on both accounts.
You all got me thinking here. I have had yeast infections from condoms. They irritate the bejeebers out of my girl parts! I have never used one with spermacide in it, so it isn't that.
With undies...don't sleep in any at night and let yur um business have more air. A hair drier is great, but being too dry ended up causing a problem for me too. It is wise and useful to bleach your underwear, and his. People way way over bleach and actually, if 10 to 15 drops will treat a gallon of bad water to make it drinkable, it can't take that much to make your panties beast free. You can put some vinegar in the rinse too, if the bleach bothers you.
I am not a great proponent of harsh chemicals, so please don't pounce on me! Some things, like bleach have a place. That place is a whole helluva lot smaller than people think. I use it frequently, but a gallon lasts me 2 or 3 yrs. Periodically, it is a very good idea to run bleach and cold water (hot water nullifies the effects of the bleach) through your washing machine to kill germs. One of the dirtiest places in your house is the inside of your washer. If you don't use both the washer AND the drier with all your clothing, the undryered clothing will have high bacterial counts for things like yeast, E.coli, salmonella, fungi, etc. The heat of the dryer, not detergent, kills bacteria and other beasts. Sick fact when it is so much better for the environment if you hang your stuff outside!
Can't win sometimes.

i just found this yesterday!!!! ooooo, its exciting. http://www.candida-cure-recipes.com./coconut-macaroon-recipe.html
Along the lines to help things dry more quickly/easily, I've found a bit of a correlation between my last "trimming" and the itchies. The itchies often go away soon after I've trimmed....
And, being the concerned, caring person I am, I feel it necessary to ask if perhaps you're eating too much soy? Because, apparently, a disintegrating uterus displays the same symptoms as a yeast infection!!!
(I had to....I'm sorry, the temptation was too great.)

haha i was thinking... ummmm... no soy is ok. what in the world is she talking about.. and then i remembered and giggled : )
about the trimming, i've been, not scared, just not into trimming because the last time i did that i was SOOOO itchy with bumps and a rash and all.... ooooo. not for me i guess : )
today i was itchy when all i ate was plain oatmeal with cinnamon, then i realized, i got itchy because i'm wearing pants. UGH! pants make it worse. this is seriously the worst. ha.
do any of you have suggestions on foods to curb sweet cravings? i have been wanting chocolate or fruit soooo badly. whats a good thing to keep those cravings at bay?
yeah, no, I meant just a trim like a hair cut ;), no bumps required!!! often times the anti-bump aids /creams/jells can lead to a yeast infection like soaps can...
hey! so i've been doing this diet pretty successfully (no more yeast infection symptoms!!) for the past month or so, but lately i've been craving sugar like mad, but the worst part is that every day i feel incredibly nautious, dizzy, tired, aggitated... just pretty shitty. and i'm wondering if its because i haven't been eating fruit, it used to be such a staple in my diet, an apple banana and dates for breakfast, whereas now i just eat a bowl of plain oatmeal. since i also can't have nutritional yeast and cacao i'm wondering if i'm feeling tired because of a lack of b 12 from the nut. and iron from the cacao.
should i be taking supplements during this time or is it just stress from work? which is quite possible... but this diet could be making work much more stressful than it actually is. i feel super stressed all the time, but when i sit down and write out a list of things that i need to do for work.... it really isnt much. most times i feel like i'm stressing out for no good reason at all.
No fruit? I am sorry and I understand your circumstances, but I have a very hard time believing that a diet with no fruit can be healthy. I mean, fruit is what humans EVOLVED to eat. We are fuit eating apes...no joking. Everything about us is to help us to gather and eat fruit. Eyes in front, color vision, gripping hands, long digestive system, sharp teeth in front, flat in back, big brains...etc.
But I definately sympathize with you, it has to be hard. Is your diet permant? I hope not, it sure doesn't sound healthy.

no its not permanent, thank goodness!! i could not do without fruit for ever. i just have a month and a half left. i think its just a cleansing thing, like a juice fast or something, but not as severe.
The reason fruit are out is due to the high sugar content.....I believe however, unsweetened cranberry juice would be alright, seeing as how cranberries are low in sugar and are good for the urinary tract!
It's so good for me to read this, being relatively inexperienced with a lot of these things. For example, I only used condoms like a total of 15 times, the first two weeks I got married. After that we stopped, and I think I have endometriosis, cause we've been without protection for nearly 3 years now, and no pregnancy, plus all the other symptoms like bad cramps, etc. So I'm sort of using my endmetriosis as tempoary birth control, until my husband gets a career, then I'm gonna go get the surgery to correct it.
So I've only had a yeast infection or at least what I THINK was a yeast infection MAYBE 4 times in my life, and all four of those times it lasts 2 days. It comes immediately after my period and then goes away quickly. I've never had to take anything for it. I'm against anti-biotics so maybe that's why I've had good luck with it.
So Even though I have relatively little to offer in the way of suggestions or advice, I want to think you for bringing this up because I still think I have a lot to learn and reading all your input has helped me get a better understanding of it all.

thats great that you didn't get started with anti biotics, that really messes things up, i think thats another thing that really made this infection just wretched. i bet if your infection comes like clockwork, you could start battling it with garlic and soy yogurt and no sugar a couple days ahead of time.
i'm terribly sorry to hear about your troubles the past couple of years, but it sounds like you have a plan and thats good!
