Warm orange juice (not hot enough to destroy the vitamins, just warm enough to soothe), sweetened with sugar or brown rice syrup. Whether or not to add a shot of whiskey or brandy is up to you.

The whiskey or brandy might add a numbing effect. ;)

If you really want to get rid of a sore throat, here are some remedies that WILL work: i agree that gargling w/ salt water is helpful. You can also gargle with apple cider vinegar and/or cayenne pepper. That works well! A great remedy I have also used is: a tea of mullein, sage, thyme, myrrh, and slippery elm. If you make it strong, and gargle with it as well as drink it, it will work wonders. You just have to deal with a strong brew...but it is worth it! Also, avoiding sweets and eating high immunity foods will help a lot too (lots of garlic, ginger, shiitakes, greens-especially kale, etc....) Good luck!! :) www.quintessence.homestead.com

I have to echo the salt-water gargling. I make my own toothpaste with baking soda, aloe gel, and spearmint essential oils, and when I have a sore throat I just gargle with that when I'm done brushing (the baking soda works like table salt in that case). Helps every time.
I think there are some herbal teas that you can buy that help with sore throats (I know Traditional Medicinal teas have one called Throat Coat, but I don't know what herbs are in it).
Also, I have to agree that avoiding sugar is a good idea. Sugar will feed the bacteria in and near your throat and suppress your immune system.

Vegetable stock/broth with some veggies added is sooooo soothing for a sore throat! It really is the chicken soup for the vegan soul. It helps me all of the tell when my throat is sore. I even used a low sodium broth. The best part is the low amount of calories in a cup too ;)

Thyme tea works well. I also love Slippery Elm Lozenges made be Trophic. I just keep one in my mouth and my throat heals up!

Gargling with salt water
absolutely agree! use 1 tsp salt in a glass of warm water. gargle several times. do not drink anything for a while afterwards. although a mouth rinse is fine. repeat several times a day. salt water gargling is magic.

My mom used to a few sppons of warm honey and lemon stirred together when I was young to coat my throat. Since honey is not vegan, perhaps there is an alternative to replace the honey ... anyone?

I take zinc with vit. C whenever I feel a sore throat / cold coming along. I've NEVER finished a bottle of pills (not even my prenatals) until I tried these. They work so well I've actually finished a bottle and most of the way through my second!
