natural deodorants... nvr

ok so i am REALLY sick of using the aluminum antiperspirant for a million different reasons, the largest being health.
the other day i bought a natural deodorant only. i finally decided to try it out. problem is i sweat SO MUCH. i thought it wouldn't be any worse because i sweat when i have on antiperspirant, anyway, but no, i sweat even more if that is possible.
anyway, i was just wondering if anyone who sweats a lot has had any luck with natural alternatives? i really don't want to use aluminum anymore but i hate sweating everything up!

The Tom's regular deodorant doesn't work at all for me (maybe for two hours, on a cold day), but I have been using the Tom's Long-Lasting roll-on and that works really well. The calendula is the cheapest scented roll-on and that smells pretty good. I also wash with Dr. Bronner's soap for my morning shower so that helps with the odor some throughout the day, since my underarms get a good cleaning before the deodorant application. I tried the baking soda method for awhile and after some time it just wasn't working for me (and it was uncomfy and scratchy), so the Tom's/Bronner's combo will have to do for now.

Hey Feelinsoreal.  Don't think I'm a stalker or anything, but I read your profile, and realized that your "veggie status" is almost identical to mine...as far as drinking soymilk, but eating cheese; eggs only in combination with recipes...that sort of thing.  So yeah, cool!  It's nice to know there's someone else out there like me!  :)

Here's my experience: I definitely agree that there is a sort of stinky transition period when switching from aluminum-based antiperspirants to more natural deodorants. But I'm pretty sure this lasted longer than 4 weeks in my case. I made the switch sometime around the spring of '05, so I can't recall exactly how long it took, but it took a while for my body to adjust to regulating its own sweat processes again (as opposed to having some antiperspirant prevent this process from occurring). It took several months. I kept buying different brands and complaining that none worked, and my friend kept telling me to be patient, and that my body would eventually adjust. And she was right. Now I use the crystal kind, and it works great for me, both the stick and the spray version. I don't know if this is because the crystal kind is better, or if it's because my body is now used to sweating on its own natural cycle. I live in Hawaii, so I certainly sweat sometimes, but it evaporates and I don't smell. So, I guess my point is--hang in there! Don't get discouraged, and for goodness sake don't switch back to antiperspirants. Keep some nice lavender body spray or something in your bag, to keep you sociable until the transition period is over.

Oh my word, I just discovered the crystal thingie... it is the most wonderful thing for me.  No fear, no gooey grease to get on my clothes, and I don't stink!

It even seems to control the wetness a little, that is until it doesn't... when it gives out, it gives out all at once.  If you shower, you don't have a "grace period" like you do with carcinogenic aluminum deodorant, either... you must reapply in order to suppress bacteria, because you've rinsed it right off.

You can use it on your feet or your sweaty underwhatever, too.  I'm a fan.

Me too!!!!

I sweat far too much for regular deodorants and antiperspirants. I tried them all, even the natural ones and they all just got gooey and gross. I use the crystal roll on for about 5 to 6 years now and love it. I keep one in my car for the occasional reapply but rarely need it. I've even had it stand up to a three hour hot detox yoga class.

Very cool, lotus24! I almost never eat eggy things but I still can't resist cheddar cheese every now and then, or my Dad's Finnish pancakes.  ;D  I have discovered, though, that adding more (yellow) mustard to vegan cheese sauce recipes (like for the enchiladas) gives it more of a cheddar flavor. :)

On-topic, I have noticed also that my body is adjusting to the natural deodorants so that may be why I'm getting better results with the natural products. When I went veg I started to sweat some more, even with regular deodorant (maybe my pores were opening up or something), but it just takes getting used to. I figure, as long as people still want to hug me or be in the same room with me, I'm doing okay!

I can't believe I'm discussing my sweat with the online VegWeb community. Hee!
