You are here

I'm mean, and I know that we've all had this conversation before, but...

When you make a post... to the right of the "Post" button, there is a "Preview" button.  To the right of that, there is <gasp> a "Spell Check" button.  Please, please, make an effort to click it!  My inner English teacher begs you!

And, yes, I realize that typos happen, and we all goof up sometimes.  But I am so tired of seeing "werid".

Glad to bother someone then.

By the way, I didn't "criticize the way others speak."  I was pointing out that "Spell Check" is a feature that is underutilized.

Ye-e-es, but if I walk into a room, wrinkle my nose and announce that someone is underutilizing the shower, I'm clearly criticizing someone's hygiene.  Especially if I then go on to say that I cringe every time I'm around X person and that by age 15 she should know better.  Anyway, as you yourself say in your subject line, it's mean.  And I don't understand being bothered by "werid" but not by meanness... it's a cure worse than the disease imo.

It's also mean to not point out to a person that their personal hygiene is lacking, though.

So, I'm mean for pointing out the misspellings.  It would also be mean to pretend that her spelling is accurate.  Since written essays, applications, and cover letters tell a potential school/ employer about the person submitting the aforementioned item, it is important to use any tools available to make a good impression.  True?  I didn't name call, just provided information that she may find useful in the future.

I love that word.

I would send you some scones, but I think they'd be rock hard by the time they got to Janis Joplin.

I actually make it a point not to use spell checks when I'm doing something non-business related.  It lets quirks and personality shine through.  Plus I've been blogging for something like 7 years now, and it makes my blog read more like a journal.

I'm not sure how misspellings make reading things more like journals, but eh, whatever!
I do understand how people (myself included) use misspellings/misuse of "proper" grammar to enhance poetry.
Perhaps that is what you meant, in a way?

i'm pretty sure english is not the dominant language in her household.
the kid is pretty passive and sweet, so if misspellings and poor grammar are her worst quality, than, she's got a good thing going.

I never said that she wasn't a sweet person, I just said that the constant misspellings are a pet peeve of mine.
And if she's new to English, I can still point out the spell check feature.

I feel your pain Tkitty - as an avid reader and as a copyeditor for my university's monthly magazine. but, hey, it's the internet. we're less formal here. I always read through my posts to check if they have spelling/grammar mistakes, and when I read them after their posted, and I do find a mistak, I go back and edit. it's the perfectionist in me.

Me too. And I think it's funny you spelled "mistake" wrong.  Lol!  Love you Laura! ;)

I also had a chuckle at that. We all make mistaks
I just get aggravated when I can't really understand what the person (it's more than one person that does this) is saying because there are so many grammatical and spelling errors.  And that does happen sometimes.  I can get the general message behind the post (I think), but it takes deciphering on my part and it makes me want to not read that person's posts any more

And yeah, sometimes we can go a really long time thinking that something we're saying/doing is right when it's actually wrong and then it gets really embarrassing when no one has pointed it out.  My roommate went like..15 years thinking that steak came from a bird.  I asked her how she could possibly have thought that.  She said "no one ever told me."  So I really don't think there's anything wrong with saying "hey, you're spelling that word wrong"
I'd much rather hear it on a message board than in real life

Most people who I know that do not speak English as their main (first) language WANT to know when they're saying/spelling something wrong so they can improve it and learn.  But that's just my experience.

I am so guilty of using different color texts.  I never thought people would have a hard time seeing them.  :o  Thanks for pointing that out.  I will stick to the darker colors if I feel the need to stray away from black.  ;)

As she is 15, she's still in school; and if she WANTS to work on her English she can probably do it there.  Anyway if this was your purpose there may have been better ways of going about it -- like sending a friendly private message saying "Hey there!  Did you know that..." rather than making a public post saying "Use spell check, you're annoying me to pieces, I cringe every time I hear you speak, you should know better at your age, etc."

Anyway, I have to say I admire the chutzpah of saying, in effect, "not only can I criticize her like this, but she should be grateful for it!"
And to think she hasn't been in here to thank you yet... last time you do her a favor huh?  ;)

Your smrt and hot!

This is the kind of content that I like to see.  However, in terms of grammar and spelling, "Your" should be "ur", there should be either zero or (preferably) multiple exclamation points, "and" should be abbreviated or replaced, and of course to be well-formed the sentence would have to include the grammatical particle "lol".  So, corrected: "ur smrt & hot lol!!!"  Probably preferable too to replace the archaic "hot" with the more current "hawt", but then as it is it's quaintly old-fashioned, which I like.

Thank you, Cephi, for eloquently putting words in my mouth.

And I really don't care if she thanks me or hates me.  But if I have something to say I will say it.  And most likely fucking SPELL CHECK before I post it.
