If your going to watch Marley and Me

...........when you see Owen Wilson walking in a field with Marley about 10 minutes from the end. Turn it off right there. Or else  :-[ :'(

Yes, I have heard this movie is very sad. I think I read an article that said you needed to be aware that it was the new "Old Yeller".. especially if you were going to show it to your children. I have completely boycotted it. I don't like to watch sad things. I see enough in real life.

My mom and sister rented it and wanted me to watch too, but I refused, knowing it was going to be sad.. I told them "The last thing I want to see is a <sad animal movie> after just losing a pet." and my sister rolls her eyes and boasts how she can "separate real life from a movie!" so they watched without me. The next day they told me it was a good thing I didn't watch it! My sister, who didn't even cry over Life is Beautiful, was bothered by this one!!  :'(

I'm happy I had warning ahead of time to know NOT to watch it though, from the previews I would have guessed it to be a happy family flick!

*Edited so I didn't spoil anything.

Why do so many dog movies have sad endings? I was devastated by the end of Turner and Hooch, back in the day. From a comedy it spiralled down into...ugh.

OK, so I know dogs live a lot shorter lives than we do, but why not accentuate the positive? Why have to drag "the Bambi Lesson" into it?

Generations of us were traumatised by Bambi, as you all know. Why perpetuate that?

Marley and Me was based on a true story.  True stories/real life doesn't always have happy endings.

I too was devestated when Hooch died.  And then you saw the pup........

is it like the book?  i cried for so long after reading it.  the story is true.  but i think everyone that has a dog goes through a similar thing.  its heartbreaking.

IMO, the book is way better. It follows the book pretty closely but I felt the book helped get across the emotional bond between Marley and the family a lot better than the movie did.  I bawled my eyes out forever too after reading it.

I was looking at this at the video store the other day.  The clerk (male) came up behind me and said:
"Don't get it....it can turn even the strongest of men to weeping bowls of jello."  His words not mine.  He also went on to say how he thought there should be a big warning label on it so folks don't show it to their kids...."they'll be traumitized for life"
He sold me Nim's Island instead.

I haven't seen the movie or read the book, but I just came to say, haha, "weeping bowls of Jell-O"! I'll have to use that one...

I have often used "reduced someone to a quivering, helpless jelly" but that's usually fear...
