Tempeh Bacon

What you need:

1 package tempeh (about 1 pound?)
1/4 cup soy sauce
1/4-1/2 t. liquid smoke
2 T maple syrup
1/4 cup water

What you do:

Mix all ingred. except tempeh. Slice tempeh in 1/4 inch strips, and marinade for a few hours. Fry in a little oil--very close to real bacon. Very good on TLTs.

SO HOW'D IT GO?

Super easy!  Yes, recomend steaming tempeh and slicing thin.  I used Trader Joes' Smoke Seasoning for the marinade. The smell is baconish and the taste is yum.

I tried this because bacon used to be one of my weaknesses! I didn't get mine quite crispy enough and I didn't think it really tasted like bacon, but I still absolutely loved this recipe!! I steamed the tempeh first to get rid of any bitterness and to help it absorb the marinade.  I used agave nectar since I didn't have any maple syrup, and used slightly more liquid smoke since I'm a big fan of the smokey taste.  I will definitely be making this again and trying for a crispier texture.

This really did taste like bacon to me.  I sliced my tempeh super thin and let it marinate overnight for best flavor.  I served it with hashbrown patties.
