Playfood Cheeze- awesome stuff! (and good for raw recipes, too!)

For those who haven't tried this new vegan cheese, it's awesome!!!   I've had the Nacheezmo melted on nachos and eaten it in raw tacos, the cheddar flavored Cheezy Cheeze on grilled cheese sandwiches, and the Cream Tang (sour cream) on nachos and raw tacos and I have loved them all!  I haven't tried the Whip Cheeze that is supposed to be like cream cheese yet.

For those of you who are interested in raw eating, it is raw cashews, purified water, nutritional yeast, and agave nectar mainly.  It was developed by a vegan raw food chef, Heide Van Pelt.  (She lives here in Kansas City, Missour now and is getting ready to open a new raw and vegan restaurant here.  YAY!!!)

(It is sold in 8 oz. plastic cylinders in the refridgerated section, not in typical cheese slices, bags, or blocks.  It has a squeeze top lid.  Took me a while to find it since I didn't realize what is was sold in. ::))

The website has a few easy recipes and store locators.

interesting! i only like raw cashews (well, mostly) when they are being cheezy so i might have to try to make something up here.

Check out the site Puppy-- it lists the ingredients for each flavor of Cheeze.  Looks like it wouldn't be too hard to play around with.

Please tell me this tastes like EZ Cheese! Or don't, since it's not available here.
I would really love to try it. I wonder if they will start selling online.

Sorry, I don't know Tofutti, I've never had EZ Cheese.   :(    When I see Heidi again at her restaurant I'll ask her about selling it on-line (sorry, I thought they did offer it on-line, but I see they don't yet) and post back.   It doesn't get all stringy like dairy cheese when it melts, but it does melt and have a soft texture.  It is the best vegan cheese I've ever tried; the most similar to dairy cheese and great flavored.

They just started their Playfood company, so it's still a very new product.  Can you ask your local HFS to carry it?

Thank you for sharing. I am missing grilled cheese sandwiches and nachos and want to try Play Food "cheese."

Couldn't find the locations in California where they sell the product though, via that link. Also, I couldn't find a contact number or e-mail on that website so I could contact the company and ask.

If anyone has this info, please share, as I would love to try this product, too. :)

:(    Ok, looks like they are so far only in the Kansa and Missouri stores (including Whole Foods and even "regular" grocery stores like Hy-Vee and Price Chopper) and I found on their website where they say they prefer that you ask your store to carry it instead of mailing out to individuals as it is so expensive to ship individually (needs to be refridgerated).  Says it is more cost-effective to ship larger shipments to support your community than to send out small ones for individuals.  I can't speak for her, but from what I know of Heidi, the creator, she is very much against the use of any animal products in her company and products and is very pro-active of supporting local farmers, community, recycling, etc. so I'm not all that surprised she takes a stand for reducing unnecessary energy use, too.

So for now, I guess you can only make a point to ask your local health food store to order her cheeze, that it's a new product, but super good!

Gee...thanks a lot for touting this fantastic cheese that doesn't ship out...luckily, I'm go to KCMO several times a year! It takes MUCHO guts to open a veg*n place of any kind in KCMO! Let me know when it opens, I'll totally take my family there so I don't have to stock their kitchens with "wierd" food (like asparagus - aack!) that they only eat when I'm in town.

Yeah, I just got so dang excited that I could have grilled cheese and nachos again when I found her Playfood at my Whole Foods here that I just assumed it was at all of 'em now!  ::)

Her restaurant, Fud (pronounced food), is open right now on Friday and Saturday evenings and Sunday mornings for brunch.  She's working on a permanent location and will be open more then.

Hey Dinkfeet-  I can highly recommend the raw spring tacos, raw wild chili, raw lasagna, Mayan crostini (raw too), her raw soups, raw cashew cheese cake, and her raw cashew soft serve!!  They are all delicious!  The "ice cream" was so good I wouldn't have known it wasn't dairy if I'd had it back in my omni days!

Give me a holler when you're in KC if you'd like!   :D    There are a few other great vegan-friendly places to eat, too, including Blue Nile (Ethiopian), Blue Koi (Oriental), Eden Alley, some Indian places, Kona Grill, Barley's Brewhaus, Genghis Khan Mongolian Grill, and more.  Those are just some of my faves.  You can find a list of some at  http://www.vegkansascity.com/restaurants.html..

Yeah, I am SOOOOOO excited about her restaurant, especially since it's mostly raw!!!!  How cool, and in KC-- the midwest-- of all places!  It's about time we caught up!  And yeah, she wants to keep it affordable, too.  I took a group of friends/family there one night and ordered almost everything on the menu, and it was all so freakin' delish  I couldn't get over it!  I can't wait til she's open full-time.  I'm either working or out of town on the weekends lately.   :'(
