My success story

I've been meaning to tell you all about this for weeks now, but time got away from me.  I was visiting my parents over the weekend of Oct. 26.  I decided, since it was World Go Vegan Days and I wasn't going to be with them for Thanksgiving, that I would cook them a vegan meal.  I made Holiday Lentil Loaf and Green Bean Casserole from this site, as well as mashed potatoes with yeast gravy from The Farm Vegetarian Cookbook.  Present were my mom and dad, two brothers, a sister-in-law and my husband.  There was a lot of joking while I was cooking and my dad was fully prepared to go to plan B if he didn't like it (and I was fine with that).  Of course, everyone loved it.  Dad first asked for just a half a piece of Lentil Loaf and then later he went back for the other half.  Several people said the GBC was the best they'd ever had (including my husband who generally dislikes cooked vegetables of any kind).  My sister-in-law asked for the GBC recipe to take to her family's Thanksgiving, because her brother-in-law recently read The China Study and went vegan.  I even got them all to toast to World Go Vegan Days!  ;D  The best part was when my dad said "I won't worry about you anymore," meaning, I think, that he was worried that I don't get to enjoy good food anymore, but now he knows that I do.  Mission accomplished.  :)

That's awesome!!  I'm going to win over my parents with BCG's pumpkin pie on Thursday.  Unfortunately, since I'm travelling, I won't be able to impress them with a fully vegan feast.  But pie's a start, right?

Thanks all.  I was pretty excited about it.

I should give my family some credit for being pretty cool about my being veg*n in general.  They're already used to me having been vegetarian for many years but I've only been vegan for about a year.  They tease me a little but if it weren't about that, it would be about something else.  That's how we roll.  ;)  Also, my dad loves food and has instilled in all of us a willingness to try new things.

Not to put a damper on it, but I should disclose that it's not like I converted them or anything.  The next morning, as per family tradition, my brother made brunch with scrambled eggs, 3 kinds of meat, and potatoes fried in bacon grease.  ::)  Bro always does a separate batch of potatoes fried in oil for me.  :)

Well, hey, he tries. Not like my SIL who insists we eat Christmas dinner with them, and then there isn't a single vegetable or fruit on the table--just meat, seafood, heavy sweets (almond and eggwhite and honey!) and alcohol. Yum--not. :P This year if we get shanghaied again I will take a salad.
