Need advice about what to do about a gift I don't want.

Last Christmas my mom got me a black leather jacket.  I have no idea why she got that for me, I guess she is stuck in the 80's and thought it was cool.  Now it is a nice jacket and fits okay and all that, but it is taking up space in my closet, and I have never worn it, and never plan to wear it.  Black leather is NOT my thing, not my style, as well as it goes against my beliefs.  Now as you know, in a couple of months I am moving so I am wanting to go through all my things and get rid of clothes that I don't wear or are too small because I have gotten fat.  I give up on loosing the weight and fitting in them again, easier to just buy new clothes and get rid of the old.  But that jacket I want to get rid of, but I have never worn it, seems like a waste, she got it for me and I feel like I am being ungrateful, but I will never wear it and I need the space, and that stupid jacket is heavy.

I am thinking that if I just got rid of it and never told her she wouldn't notice, because I don't live with her, and when I am living with her, it is only temporary and most of my stuff will be in storage, not to come out until I find a new job and a new place to live.  There is also a guitar that I have that she gave me as a gift a few years back that I used to try to play, never got the hang of it and now never touch it anymore, and it is also junk sitting around.

Ebay or Craigs List.
Should she ask, mention that you had gotten rid of a lot of things to pay for baby things.

You need the space, you need the money and you have unused good items.  Let her know that it was hard for you to make these decisions but many of your belongings had to be pared down to few enough to move across the country and prepare for the baby.  Its just that simple, honest and she will understand I am sure.

Ohh, that is a good idea.  I was just planning on donating it to Goodwill but selling it would be better and she would feel better about that too I think.  She would totally understand.  But I just won't mention it, maybe she won't notice that I won't have it anymore.

Yes, definitely sell it.  Even if you only get a couple of bucks, its better than nothing.  And its true.  You do need to save space and get ready for the baby.

Also, SQ, I in no way want to push my parenting style on you.  But I know you've mentioned wanting to save money, so I will just suggest something that will save you a ton in the long run.

Cloth diapers.  My favorite kind are Fuzzy Bunz.http://www.fuzzibunz.com/
They go on and fit just like a normal disposable diaper. They are the best and are easy for sitters, daycare, family, etc...to use.  Disposables cost a fortune...not to mention the waste.  I wish I still had all of mine...I would send them to you!

Jacket:  Craigslist.  You didn't immediately get rid of it, you waited a while, so it's okay.

Guitar:  Send to me.  >:D

Hey SQ, you mentioned that you have given up on loosing your prego weight.  Don't give up on hope!!!  I'm assuming that you are going to nurse your baby, and it's amazing how nicely your body will chew through the calories it's storing!!!  I was back into my normal clothes (size 8 ) when my daughter was 9 ish weeks old, and I wasn't working out yet.  I was into a size 6 when she was about 6 moths old...I think it was because she was chugging more of my milk, so my body used up more calories.  Gotta love nursing!!!  ;D

He he, you guys are funny.

About the guitar, it isn't very nice, I think it is a cheapo Wal-mart guitar.  But honestly, if you want me to send it go you I will.

Ditto on the cloth diapers... We use(d) exclusively cloth for our twins... 160 a week when they were newborn  :o (down to 7 a week now for ds who is still not night-time trained.)  We use(d) prefolds with bummi's whisper wraps.  I'm very proud to say i've used only two disposibles, and they were swim diapers the first time we took the boys to the pool and were told it was "pool regulations".

Fuzzy Bunz, cute name!

I will look into the cloth diapers.  But I think first I need to learn how to change a diaper, since it is something I have never done before!  ::)

You could try to consign the jacket, you probably will get more for it than on Craig's list, esp if it's new.

They are second hand stores that take gently used or new items and sell them for you, they take usually half the profit, but because they have a larger number of people coming through to actually look for clothes, they usually sell it for a lot more than garage sales. You should really try to find some, because, especially for kid's things, there are great deals for new or almost new items.

I agree, I would definitely try to sell it. You can use the money to get some things you need for the baby. :)
