Valentine's Day rut... help?

Okay, so you wouldn't think we'd be in a rut already. We just don't know what to do tomorrow! We've thought and thunked and whatever.... but no good plans. This is only our second Valentine's Day together (in the same state, anyway) and last year I think we just made some cupcakes and watched a movie.
Which was okay....
We have next to no money to spend, but I'd love to do something really nice for Josh... beyond cupcakes. We both have all day off tomorrow. It's probably going to thunderstorm, though (which is nice in its own way, we like storms).
Can you help?
*Cheap or free
*Romantic
*Different from the norm
Thanks, guys!
Where you are you probably would freeze if you had a picnic, so hold one in your living room or the bedroom.
Put a blanket on the floor, get a picnic basket and fill it with good crusty bread, cold fruit, wine, and other nibbly things. Feed each other. (See, now, if you do it in the bedroom, this could lead to...dessert.) You want easy-to-eat food. Don't know if you like olives but I do.
Or build your own pizzas and bake them together. Each one can put on what they like best.
I would definitely watch a movie together. That's what we do. If you are tempted to read poetry aloud to each other...resist. Because you will get the giggles and start to feel silly. It's far too solemn.
I knew you guys would come through!
We actually WOULDN'T freeze if we had a picnic... and if it's sunny that would be a great idea. BUT... it's probably going to thunderstorm tomorrow. So we could just open all our blinds and watch it rain like the sky is falling (one thing I love about Louisiana) while we have a living-room picnic.
Keep the ideas coming, guys! These are getting my creative juices flowing!

Ahh, love!
I didn't have a lot of money last year for Valentine's, so I made my own gift for Katie.
Things I bought:
A plastic heart that was about the size of my hand that opened down the middle (I think candy was supposed to be in it)
A toy police officer set
Some chocolate
What I did:
I took the toy police officer set, cut it open, took the key that was for the handcuffs and threw the rest of it away.
Luckily for me, the plastic heart had a little loop on the top of it, so I took some string and tied the key to the heart, but I could've put the key inside the heart if it didn't have that.
I wrote Katie a poem (words and lyrics are kind of a big deal to me) about how she has the key to my heart and put it inside of the plastic heart. I also put some chocolate in with it.
:)
We aren't doing much this year in regards to gifts besides getting netflix. I'm going to take her out to eat for lunch tomorrow (I HATE trying to eat dinner on Valentine's at a restaurant...too many bad experiences), and I'm going to make her brinner (breakfast for dinner) because she loves it so much.
Yabbit already gave you my idea! Picnic in front of a warm fire, window to outside or lovely view. Make fun finger type foods. Melt chocolate chips and dunk things in it.
Play a romantic board game. You could probably find something online to use; like 20 questions but ya know, sexy! hahah
Yeah my mind is in the gutter. Sorry! Thats all I got.
How does watching the sun set, rise or counting the stars under a blanket appeal to you?
on a lighter side this is an email I just received from my mom...
"Did you receive your VD card?"
So, what did you finally do? Prespiring minds want to know!!
Ha! Silly Yabbit, :)
Well, I tried to cook dinner.... but my stuffed mushrooms were so bad we could barely choke them down. We laughed until we had tears rolling down our faces because we were so intent on eating them. Me because I made them, and him because he didn't want to hurt my feelings. He said next year maybe we should go out to eat.
:-D
I gave him NetFlix for his gift, which he really loved and spent all day adding things to his queue. He cleaned up from my cooking fiasco, then we went to spend the evening with another couple because it was my friend's birthday... and she told us she's pregnant!!!!!!!!!!!! WHICH IS AWESOME!
And we ate the most fantastic cheesecake in the world (Josh bought it and he has excellent taste for desserts) and it made my belly hurt but I didn't care.
Then we watched Kung Fu Panda and went to a cafe late at night and had hot chocolate and sat outside on the covered patio while it rained, and talked with a group of friends.
I had a good time. Except that dinner was not very good... but it sure SMELLED good, at least!
8-)
So, what's everyone planning for Valentines day. I think I'm going to surprise my honey with a weekend getaway and spa day.
Ha, I don't have to worry about Valentines day! ;)b
Being single sure has it's advantages, I don't have to worry about giving a gift! I like to give gifts, but I hate to figure out what to give. Biggest pain in the neck!
Have fun all you love birds out there, think my son and I will go geocaching! If it is warm enough that is. :-*
VD never existed in Spain until somebody made a superlame film about it in the 60s. It was immediately co-opted by the national department store chain.
DH refuses to pay any attention to it. That's fine with me as we celebrate each other whenever we want, however we want, instead of in a prescribed fashion on a prescribed day.

Sounds like a good time to me!
Aw, I think it's kind of sweet to have a day set aside to especially demonstrate affection. Well, I think I would, if the holiday applied to me. Yeah.
I am going to make my SO truffles and than put them in a heart shaped box made out of gingerbread. Complete the day with some candles, a bottle of Moscato d'Asti, and a nice quiet evening in.

That sounds amazing! You romantic thing, lucky SO.
Last year my man and I had a horror movie marathon then went to see My Bloody Valentine in 3D. It was so awesomely not Valentine's-y. :D
This year we will be 800km away from each other :(
VD in Holland is similar to Spain. It only took off in recent years thanks to the retailers looking at it, as a way to make some cash. We still celebrate it just because, although we don't do big gifts or anything.
We have two small kids, so we plan a date night monthly - usually, it's in our house after they've gone to bed. We watch movies or play games after having a nice dinner just the two of us with a bottle of good wine.
Every other month, a friend comes over and babysits, so we go out. Nothing big, just a dinner and couple of drinks ending with a soy latte at Starbucks.

Usually I try to be quirky, but I want to do something really creative and romantic this year. I saw a gingerbread jewelry box a few weeks ago in the store and thought of making a candy box. I am quite excited to try this. I will have mad romanticism skills, yes? Well, probably still no, but I will be happy to have thought up something unique.
Ha, I haven't seen My Bloody Valentine - maybe we should watch that.
:( Sorry about you and your SO not being together for V day. Being apart on special days is not good.
My BF would probably love it if we watched My Bloody Valentine! He really likes horror movies, while I am so not into them. They make me feel creeped out and scared for days. I am such a wuss. :)
I would have liked to do something together, but we may just have to do a rain check and celebrate Valentine´s on another day. We move exactly around the 14th and will be on a train for 30 hours before we arrive with lots of our belongings in Shanghai. Moving will be so stressful and expensive so neither of us will probably be in the mood or have the money for even a small gift.
I was thinking that maybe when we find an apartment we could have a little housewarming party to ourselves and make it a little romantic. Sort of as a celebration of having a place and being together. It could be interesting since we will both be completely broke and all our belongings will not have been sent yet, I foresee that finger food could be a viable option since we won´t have pots or pans or silverware!
Not to mention that all this will be going on during Chinese New Year. Maybe the non-stop explosions will be romantic? ;D
urgh. I strongly dislike valentines day and all it's associations.
good thing I'm married to the least romantic man I know then, isn't it?
:O
But V-day is so much fun... why do you dislike it?
It'll be my first V-Day with a partner, so I'm intending to enjoy it. P mentioned it, expressing regret that he has to work on the day, so I think if I plan to celebrate it the day after, which is one of his days off, he'll enjoy it with me. Yay cheezy romance.
If I do enough planning and practice, we may enjoy the following... pancakes with berry sauce, a picnic lunch in a park somewheres, gifts and silly cards, and some kind of movie and dessert. We shall see.
