I absolutely hated the rectangle cheese pizza and the glue-like macaroni and cheese they served in elementary school.....my favorite were the "just like reese's bars" they served with the sack lunch on Thursdays (yes, I remember the day)

Hmmm..this is hard because there were so very many "worst" lunches.  I guess I would have to say the slimy hamburgers laying in oily goop is still pretty vivid in my mind as the foulest thing served.  Although, the square pizza with gritty, strange tasting sauce, hard cheese,  & unbreakable crust was pretty bad too.  Oh, and it is worth mentioning that they also managed to make PB & J inedible.  Best thing - um, my junior year of HS we got a salad bar in the cafe.  This was definitely the best lunch I had in school.

I hated the meat loaf so much that one time I stuffed it in my milk carton, and the lunch lady said I had to finish my milk before I could get up and go to recess!

I want this book!

Worst: inedible vegetables.  The only thing that was ever worth having-green beans (from a can).

In junior high, I loved these things called crispitos. They were basically like skinny fried chimichangas with meat ( >:( ) and beans. I also loved when we got a salad and baked potato bar in high school. In elementary school, my mom would pack me lunches, and put cards in them. <3

awwww man, I thought you were giving away a vegan "lunch box" - I was psyched!

Well worst lunch ever was whenever they had spaghetti...it was so gross. I was not a fussy eater as a kid and pretty much ate anything and actually loved spaghetti but the spaghetti at my elementary school was mutant. :o

I was eating a chicken patty one day at school, when a person at my table started telling a story.  He said that a friend of his mother was eating a chicken patty one day when she bit down and something in the sandwich popped.  It turned out that the chicken had had a tumor, and that she had bitten on it, and gotten some of those juices in her mouth.

Needless to say, that was probably the worst lunch I ate at school (whether the story was true orn not).

Best: At UC Berkeley, Tofu Szechuan at the dorm cafeteria
Worst: In grade school, a burrito stuffed with this orangey-colored mystery meat

The worst was probably the questionable mac & cheese in the rectangular cardboard tray with the thin plastic covering over it. I'm not sure if the manufacturers knew that the plastic should NOT go into the food product itself ... it certainly tasted like they didn't know where to separate them!

I really want this book too!!

My fav lunches were spam sandwiches with Branston pickle - the dinner lady liked me lots and always gave me the ones with extra jelly coz I loved that bit - I think I would totally puke at this sandwich today, but I used to love love love it!

The worst school lunch I can remember is the yearly Thanksgiving meal they served at my elementry school...it was turkey, stuffing, mashed potatoes (instant), and cranberry sauce mixed together served cassarole-style and topped with the nastiest congealed brown gravy.

My favorite lunches were the ones I got on my birthday, since not only were they my favorite foods (pb&j, cookies, etc)... but my mom would always write a little note wishing me a happy birthday.  Moms are the best  <3

In elementary school it was salisbury steak which was some kind of mystery meat.  They also served a cake which was supposed to be spice cake but tasted bland and looked ugly.  I called it crawdad cake because it was the color of the crawdads that kids fished for in the creeks.  In jr. high I ate a deep fried burrito which made me sick for an entire weekend.

Worst: Either that goopy meat/mystery liquid/potatos mixed together into moosh stuff. Or The pizza with plastic wrap cooked ontop of it. Orrrr. Once i'm pretty sure (this is mad weird) They had like, ham and peanut butter sandwiches. I SWEAR. Like. seriously? (it was when the cafeteria was being rebuilt so we had cold sandwiches for a year) all of this is elementry school i think.

Favorite: In my non meat eating days, the fries and kiwis were what i always mooched off of others in high school. But before that. I'd have to say the one day the year we had no warm lunches and our cafeteria manager was the COOLEST guy ever. and he went out in the rain and brought his hugeee grill (i think he catered too or something) and stood under an umbrella cooking every single person burgers. He also made us cake that day from scratch.

When I was in Junior High, (and probably getting sick anyway) I walked downstairs to the lunch room and got hit with the smell of cooking Spam.  I lost all that was in my stomach right there, and haven't been able to abide the smell, or even sight, of spam ever since.

my favorite school lunch was the taco boats in the cafeteria.. they were like square deep tostadas filled with taco meat, cheese, lettuce and tomato.. man i should make some of those.. they were so good! it would be so easy to make vegan using the instant taco mix and the new daiya cheese melted on top of it! omg! yum!

We used to have this vegetable soup that was somehow really thick and chunky.  There was no way to tell what the chunks were, but the texture was kinda like canned stewed tomatoes with with soggy bread-like chunks.  I can't even describe it.  It was one of the grossest things I've ever seen.  It was served with thousand island covered iceberg lettuce and foam cornbread.  Gross.

I really want this book....way more than the other people who said they really want it.  Seriously.  ;)

As for the best lunch I ever had at school I would have to go with a big juicy apple with a banana!  Simple, yes but I loves me an apple.

The worst was the burnt mac and cheese!  Not only was I never fond of mac and cheese to begin with but they had to go ahead and burn it to a crisp.

wow first of all I'm amazed at the concept of lunch being provided at school in the first place, is that standard or did you all go to private schools or something?

I have always packed my own lunch so haven't got a worst lunch story but I loved feijoa season when I would just take half a dozen or more feijoas and a spoon to school and be happy all day : )

We didn't have school lunch until I was in high school, I loved the grahm/pb bars with chocolate on top, I have been trying for over 10 years to recreate those things, and the jello with applesauce mixed in, had a weird texture, but it grew on you

The salads were the worst, they all came pre made, and all included cheese (not so bad) plus either ham (nasty, smelly) or egg (uggggggg), even if you picked it off the whole salad still smelled like ham or egg. I shudder at the memory.
