Advice on keeping cats out of our garden...

My new neighbors have 3 or 4 cats.  They are outdoor cats and roam at will...they have been using our garden as a litter box! >:( >:( I am angry about this and my dh is ready to kill the cats.  Probably not actually kill...he also had the idea of using a have-a heart trap and relocating them 5 towns away...I hope he was kidding.  Please someone have a good idea!

Cats seem to hate the smell of lemon or citrus. Maybe you could spray the area with some orange or lemon scented water? Laying down some orange or lemon peels (as long as the have the smell) might work as well. This worked when cats kept digging into my trash. Hope this helps.

Plants some hot peppers around the garden?

I know cats hate pepper, even the scent of it.

There are "repellant" sprays or drops available, you might ask a vet. They have one here called Dogzoff that I used to keep our cat from "inappropriate soiling" at one point and even tho it was for dogs it worked.

The gardening books I have read suggest keeping the loose soil covered with something like plastic.  That really isn't the most environmentally friendly suggestion though, unless you already have it around.  My cats hate citrus and cedar.  I don't know what it would do to the soil's pH but maybe cedal chips would work or maybe scattered orange peels.

Heh. My cat is sleeping on a dog bed made of cedar chips right now.

Sorry I can't help. :/

I might be wrong here....but I am beginning to think sb has a very sarcastic sense of humor lol    my cats hate water....so maybe if you squirt them with a water bottle or gun when you see them near the garden they will back off a bit.  They also hate vodka.

okkkay...so once while inebriated I decided t would only be fair to have the kitties share in my joy, so i put my finger in the vodka and wiped a smidge on each kitty's paw and when they licked it off they went bonkers licking their lips and shaking their heads and charging full speed through the house with their ears back. Now if they smell vodka, i swear, they get a disgusted look on their faces and shake their heads and run away.

(as Charlie Brown): I'VE GOT IT!!!!
I don't know why I didn't think of this.
Get a spray bottle that holds about a cup, cupanahalf. Fill it with the cheapest vodka you can get your mitts on--or I bet Everclear would work too. Add a generous dropping of citronella oil--about 30 drops. Spray liberally where you don't want them to go.

You could try lavendar too.
Or plant lemongrass around the propertyline. They hate it.

There are motion controlled sprinkler things you can get that will send a stream of water at anything it sees coming into the area you have it set up in. No idea how much they cost though. :\

Oi! Evergreen Amazon delivers.

Motion Activated Scarecrow Sprinkler: http://www.amazon.com/Contech-Electronics-CRO101-Scarecrow-Motion-Activated/dp/B000071NUS.

Looks like these things have come down in price quite a bit in the last few years.
