Baked Toaster-like Pastries
3/4 cup whole wheat flour
1/4 cup whole wheat pastry flour
1/2 cup margarine
1/4 cup water
fruit jam or preserves, as needed
1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees F. Grease a cookie sheet and set aside. In a bowl, combine the flours (you can use whatever flour you want).
2. Add the margarine and cut into flour with pastry cutter or fork, adding water as needed; I didn't need the full 1/4 cup. Divide dough into 4 equal sized balls, and on a floured surface, roll each out one at a time into a rectangle shape.
3. On 1/2 the rectangle, spread about 1 tablespoon (or more if you like) of jam, leaving an edge of dough visible. Fold dough over to cover the jam and use a fork to connect the edges. You might need a little water to get them to hold together, if you use a lot of flour to roll it out.
4. When all 4 are done, put them on the cookie sheet and bake for 12-18 minutes. Take them off the cookie sheet and let rest on a cooling rack.
SO HOW'D IT GO?
This was my first attempt at baking anything vegan. I made mine with apple butter. I just tried one, and I think they would be better if I had added the suggested frosting, but overall, not bad.

Yum! I have these in the oven now. I'm reviewing already because they look and smell great and I can't imagine them being anything but great.
I did make a couple changes. Because I have lots of pears and plums on hand right now, I just cut up 1 pear and 1 plum and put that in, in place of jam. I also sprinkled the filling with cardamom and cinnamon and some extra sugar. I also added some spices to the pastry: ginger, cardamom, nutmeg, cloves, and a tisch of salt. Can't wait until they're done! If they're good I'll make a double batch and freeze them. Yum!
Here is what I did:
~doubled it because 1 batch would not last 2 seconds in this house and from that dough made 12 instead of 8
~subbed no sugar added apple sauce for half of the margarine, they needed too cook longer than specified and I wonder if it was because of this change?
~melted 1 tbsp Earth balance and brushed that across all 12, then sprinkled 1 tbsp raw sugar (total) over them
~used about 4 tsp of Simply Fruit per pastry
Other than that, I did it exactly as stated.
I didn't analyze the recipe totally but including my changes I came up with 207 cals per each of the 12. When I first bit into it I thought maybe the dough could use a little something more, but by the end of that pastry I had decided that they were absolutely perfect as is. Great recipe!!! My husband and picky daughter loved them, and I'll see what my older daughter thinks later when she's home from school.

These are so yummy! Heterotechno, you take amazing food pictures! I don't think I'd ever try to make regular-shaped pop tarts. lol.
I used raspberry jam, and I also used flour on the cookie sheet instead of greasing it. It worked out really well. If you eat them right when they come out of the oven, the filling gets runny but is still yummy. :D
soooooo yummy! my omni husband proclaimed "these are DELICIOUS!" and said they were so much better than pop-tarts or the "regular" toaster pastries.
i can imagine these would be awesome with just about any type of filling. i'm thinking about an apple pie version next time. :)>>>
I used half the butter and they still turned out delicious, but the innards exploded everywhere. I guess I'll have to be more careful with the edges next time. And try not to burn my tongue when I can't wait for those innards to cool.

I kind of messed up with the water though.. Hehe..
When I use recipes on here I always run back and forth from the kitchen to the living room to see what to do next and I thought it said 1/2 cup water so I just had to improvise a bit. ^^;
(Sometimes I wonder if I might have a bit of dyslexia..)
I used apple butter in half of them and grape jam in the other.
But I didn't add enough of it, in my opinion.
I don't like having three straight bites of flour.
Next time I'll add more of All Purpose Flour instead of Whole Wheat Flour, I'm not a big fan of Whole Wheat, some apple sauce, and totally different fillings!
What I really like about this recipe though is that it fills you up in a good way.
Sometimes when I'm full I feel a bit sick, but right now I'm happily content. :)
These are so tasty! Used raspberry preserves, sooo good!
We couldn't eat them all so I froze the leftovers and popped them in the toaster this morning for breakfast, it worked out perfectly (no leaking or running) and tasted great! I actually think my boyfriend liked them better after being frozen and toasted. Thanks for the recipe!
