Better than Sonics Onion Rings!

What you need:

1/4 cup flour (I like whole wheat)
salt, to taste
pinch baking powder
1/8 pound silken firm tofu
1/4 cup nondairy milk (I use soy)
1 tablespoon lemon juice
1 medium onion, sliced to rings
oil, for frying

What you do:

1. Mix flour, salt, and baking powder together in a small bowl.
2. Throw the tofu, milk and lemon juice in a blender and blend until all the tofu is blended. Combine wet to dry and stir; you may need to add a bit more milk.
3. Heat oil in a frying pan. Dip each ring into the batter and fry them all till they are golden brown.
4. Drain on paper towels, throw on some salt and serve with a friend or alone (you'll probably wanna gobble them all up yourself, but I shared with my mom!)
These may become an addiction!

SO HOW'D IT GO?

Has anyone ever tried baking these?

So good! But I almost feel cheated; I spent 15+ minutes prepping and making them, and they were gobbled up in less than five! I'll be making these again, I'm sure. And yes, they were far better than Sonic's! 5 Stars :)

HOLY CRAP! the best onion rings i've ever had! i followed the recipe exactly, just added a tiny bit of turmeric and garlic powder...i also followed the suggestion of dipping them in panko bread crumbs after dipping them in the batter...i am trying to think of anything else we can possibly fry, now!

Try using leeks instead of onions - I love onions but leeks hold the batter much better and don't turn that kind of slimy that onions can sometimes get

I made these the other day. I think my definition of a medium onion is different than yours though, hah. I made extra batter and it wasnt enough still. So next time i'll make lots. It was very good!! It made a TON of onion rings out of that one onion. And they crisped up nice later that day in the toaster oven.

I used this batter to make tempura veggies tonight using a zucchini, fresh green beans, a bell pepper, and an onion.  It turned out really great.  This batter has a great consistency!!!  I quadrupled the recipe and ended up with a bit of extra batter.  It does take a long time to cook since the veggies will stick if they are placed too close in the pan.  Now we are dreaming of adapting to make it into funnel cakes!

Does anyone know a recipe for a zesty onion ring sauce?? I used to love it from burger king whne i wasnt vegan :'( thx!

I'd try the Chilis recipe listed above; IIRC Chili's is quite similar to BK (though it's been awhile!)

This is an amazing batter.  Added a little bit of paprika, garlic salt, and pepper and  smothered some mushrooms and green bells in this wonderful stuff.  I'm so happy i found this recipe. I use it about three or four times a week.
