Calzone Dough
1 2/3 cups flour
1 teaspoon garlic powder
3 tablespoons ground flaxseeds
pinch salt
6 tablespoons ice water (or more as needed)
4 1/2 tablespoons olive oil
1. In a bowl combine flour, garlic powder, flaxseeds, and salt, and mix with a fork. Add the olive oil and water.
2. Mix until a ball of dough forms kneading until that happens. Add 1 tablespoon of water at a time if necessary. Wrap in saran wrap and set aside to make desired filling.
3. Preheat oven to 400 degrees F. Cut into 8 even pieces (keeping all wrapped in plastic except the one you are working with.) Roll out on a cutting board and use flour to keep from sticking. Make a 5 or 6" round.
4. Place 1/3 of desired filling into each and fold over and seal. Brush with olive oil and bake for 40 minutes.
The flaxseeds in this act as a fat and cut down the calories and amount of olive oil needed.

something creamy: FYH Nacho cheese or Daiya mozzarella or nutritional yeast cheese sauce
something saucy: pizza sauce
veggies: bell pepper, onion, garlic, broccoli, spinach, mushrooms
analogues (optional): Tofurky Italian sausage, vegan bacon bits
I need ideas for the filling Please?
I grew up eating lots of calzones, and love them. Haven't had them for 5 years since I turned vegan! So thought I'd give making them myself a shot. Tried using this for the crust... Though it's a decent crust, it's not at all like authentic calzone crust (Well, not even close, really). So if you just want a crust that you can use with calzone filling... this might do. But if you want a real calzone crust, keep looking ;)!
(S)he meant ground, as is explained in the recipe directions rather than the ingredient list.
Of course you can get ground flax seed at a health food store, BUT, FYI I found some at Wal-Mart (a "Supercenter") so that makes me think it's probably not too exotic for any other "regular" grocery store.

when you called out for flax seeds,
did you mean the flax seed as a whole or the flax seed flour?
If I were to only make one calzone at a time, could I store the dough for later use? Where would I store it & for how long would it stay good/fresh? Also, where can I find ground flaxseed? Thanks!
this crust worked so well. it was hearty but crunchy and just all around tasty.
