Chana Masala

What you need:

2 tablespoons vegetable oil
1 medium onion, chopped
1 large clove garlic, minced
1 tablespoon curry
1 tablespoon tomato paste (I used ketchup, how embarrassing)
1 (15 ounce) can chickpeas, drained, reserving 3 tablespoons liquid
1/2 tablespoon lemon juice
1/2 teaspoon salt
fresh black pepper, to taste
crushed red pepper, to taste, optional
1 tablespoon vegan margarine

What you do:

1. Heat oil on medium high heat. Fry onions until slightly browned. Reduce heat to medium. Add garlic, curry, and paste. Stir and simmer about 2 minutes.
2. Add chickpeas, reserved liquid, lemon juice, salt, and black pepper. Simmer 5-6 minutes, stirring occasionally.
3. Add red pepper, to taste. Add margarine, stirring through to melt it. Stir and simmer for 5 minutes more or until chickpeas are softened and dish is hot. Serve over rice.
Source of recipe: I don't know how authentic this is, but I whipped it up last night. It tasted great to me.

SO HOW'D IT GO?

we made this at home and it was 1.  incredibly easy and 2.  delicious!  i added some cumin, stewed tomatoes and a little chili paste to give it more kick- but we ate the whole batch between the two of us!

serve over rice.  i'm going to make this whenever i need a quick, cheap, easy fix for dinner.

This was extremely easy to make. I used more chickpeas so that I could just use a whole can of coconut milk and 1 little can of tomato paste. I also added 2 pinches of garam masala, which really made the dish... be careful and don't add too much at once since it's potent stuff.

Tasted even better the next day for lunch after sitting in the fridge.

This was delicious!  I served this with some stewed tomatoes on the side, which was quite a good mix.  I also added cinnamon (from a recommendation) and it was so good!  This dish was very beautiful too when it was complete.  I definitely recommend it to anyone who needs a quick, simple, yet complicated-appearing dish.

I really love this recipe. I make a couple of changes though - I use 3 TBS of tomato paste, I add about 1/8 TSP of garam masala, and I use 3/4 cup of lite coconut milk instead of the lemon juice. It makes it more rich but this isn't something I eat everyday, so it's a treat. It's really really delicious and very easy to make - perfect for a quick weeknight dinner, especially because it's right out of the pantry. I serve it over steamed jasmine rice. Thanks!

Anyone have ideas on what veggies would be good in this?

i usually go with steamed broccolli with a little earth balance, or wilted shredded kale cooked with a little lemon and earth balance. i think plain veggies go well with something like this, cos they're refreshing, but simple.

i also normally eat chana masala with pilau rice- that way you get a beautifully rich red, zingy yellow and fresh green, really appitising  (and pretty on the plate) looking meal.

This was PERFECT.  I had dried chick peas I didn't know what to do with, and this was such a quick and easy fix.  I used soy milk in the place of coconut mikl, and katsup ( hey...it works), and it came out sooooo tasty.  This will DEFINITELY be a staple in our house from now on!!

I loove this. If i'm gonna have chickpeas I immediately turn to this recipe now, and my brother wants to try it just because of the smell whilst it was cooking! yummy  :)
