Easy Cabbage Casserole

What you need:

1 medium head of cabbage
1 cup uncooked lentils
1 cup uncooked basmati rice
2- 8oz. cans tomato sauce
2 cups water
1 teaspoon salt
1 teaspoon onion powder
1 teaspoon garlic salt
1 teaspoon pepper
1 teaspoon basil
1 teaspoon Natures Seasonings (all purpose seasoning)

What you do:

Slice cabbage and layer half the cabbage in a casserole dish. Reserve the other half of the sliced cabbage and one 8 oz can tomato sauce. Combine everything else in a bowl and pour evenly over cabbage. Top with remaining cabbage. Add a little water in with the can of tomato sauce and pour over the top of cabbage.
Cover with foil or lid and bake for 1 1/2 hours at 350 degrees, until liquid is absorbed.
Note: Brown rice can be used, but you might want to add a little more water. This dish has a definite peppery taste that compliments the cabbage. Hope you'll try it and enjoy it as we do.

SO HOW'D IT GO?

I also made this in the crockpot, I think the total water was more like 8 cups verses four but I have a large crockpot and was using a huge head of lettuce. It was ok but unappetizing to look at. My 5 year old wouldnt touch it everyone else ate but I dont think I will make it the same way again.

I don`t know way this has such a high rating. I just was not impressed. I halved it but used the full amount of liquids and it was dry and peppery. the kids hated it and so do I

I absolutely HAD to get rid of some organic red cabbage and it pained me to think of the whole head going in the composter, so I tried this recipe.  I needed to add an extra cup of water and I needed to cook the meal for an extra 30-40 minutes to avoid pure crunchiness.  The lentils could have stood to have been cooked even longer, but the rice and the cabbage were good after a total of about two hours in the oven.  Next time I would use a crock pot.  I also think some melting vegan cheese on top made this scrumptious.  I use Vegan Gourmet.  Other than the rediculous amounts of gas this gave me, I vote a thumbs up.  (PS: It gets better when you leave it in the fridge overnight!)  ;)b

You definitely must add extra veg broth and extra tomato sauce to keep this recipe from being too dry. We used Napa cabbage, and it was really good.

I love cabbage and am always looking for new ways to cook it up. I like this recipe because it's tasty and filling, baked, and nutritious. I've also got enough for my husband and me to eat for a few days. It's not a "wow" recipe but it's still good!

I also had to modify it a bit after it cooked to suit my tastes. As is, I found it to be a bit bland, but loved the lentils with the cabbage.

This was very tasty! I modified the recipe a bit, following others' reviews. I did make mine in the crock pot, which made it even easier. I used brown rice and cut down on the black pepper. I did use veg bouillon instead of plain water, and added chopped onion and paprika. I cut the basil because I didn't think that would go very well with the other flavors, and subbed dried parsley. I started with 4 C of bouillon, but then added 2 more cups of water towards the end of the crock-potting, about 4 hours in (of about 5 hours in the crock pot).

This was really easy, really tasty, and makes a ton! What's not to love?

I had loads of cabbage in my fridge to use up so thought I would try this recipe. I wasn't really expecting much from it, but it was quite nice.
I didn't have any all purpose seasoning, so added some thyme, cayenne & mixed herbs.  I also addded a dash of wocestershire sauce.
I didn't have any onion powder, so omitted that & used garlic powder instead of garlic salt.
I also used stock intead of plain water.
I did have to add a bit more water & tomato sauce during cooking as it was looking quite dry.

Be warned....it makes a huge amount!  This is a good thing as I have leftovers for tomorrow!
If I have cabbage to use up in the future, I will use this recipe.

:)This is a great recipe -- makes a lot of food for not a lot of money, and it tastes great.  I made mine in my crockpot -- better to cook the rice separately and add it later.  Cabbage tastes really good in crockpot when it's allowed to cook all day.

This was a pretty good recipe.  I put it all in the crock pot and it worked out great!  Taste really close to cabbage rolls, which I LOVE!!  My husband liked this recipe as well! I may try adding some soy crumbles to make it even closer to cabbage rolls.
Good recipe!! Thanks.
