Gyro Salad with Mint Chutney and Roasted Red Pepper
1/8 teaspoon each basil, thyme, rosemary, and marjoram
8 pieces vegan lamb, thawed if frozen
four thin slices red onion, or desired amount
1 tablespoon olive oil
1 clove garlic, pressed
For the Salad
6 leaves of red leaf lettuce, chopped
1 radish, ends removed, and sliced thin
1 tomato, quartered
1 clove garlic, chopped
4 Kalamata olives
3 inches scallion, chopped
1 large red pepper
1 - 1/2 slice lemon, salted
1 tablespoon mint chutney
1) Blacken the red pepper. I have a gas stove and tend to sit the pepper directly on the range, with the flame around medium low. As one part blackens, turn the pepper using tongs. Then remove from heat and allow to cool a few minutes.
2) Heat olive oil in a small to medium frying pan. When oil is heated add red onion and saute until they start to soften. When onions soften add vegan lamb, all the seasonings listed in first ingredient section, and pressed garlic. Stir until vegan lamb is hot and then remove from heat.
3) Peel blackened skin from pepper using a knife. The skin will come off very easily. Once peeled remove stem and seeds, then slice pepper into four equal parts and arrange on a plate.
4) Arrange lettuce on plate with peppers, followed by tomatoes, Kalamata olives, radish, garlic slices. Pour vegan lamb and red onions over salad. Top with scallions and chutney and garnish with lemons. Enjoy.
Source of recipe: This recipe developed unexpectedly while making lunch. Every once and awhile throwing stuff together does result in something great. Also I should note, my prep and cooking times are off, so I would say give or take a few additional minutes.
SO HOW'D IT GO?
I have never, ever seen vegan lamb. Where do you find it, and is it good? I never had real lamb, so I wouldn't have a comparison, but what is the texture like? Of the vegan stuff, I mean. =) Thanks! This salad looks way tasty.
I got mine from vegieworld.com. On the last page of the section marked meat, you will find the vegetarian lamb, click on it and you will discover that it is vegan. This place has a tone of vegan and vegetarian products, but make sure to check their ingredients because while much of the stuff that is marked vegetarian is also vegan, there are other things that have whey or milk in them. Also check out vegecyber.com. I tend to get stuff here first because the shipping is cheeper, and the minimum purchase price (if there is one) is ten dollars where as vegieworld aka May Wah has a fifty dollar minimum purchase, which is great for bulk shopping.
Real lamb is kind of like a cross between beef and turkey. It is very tender, and absorbs flavor well. The imitation lamb that I get has a very meat like texture, if you don't like that you should definitely pass on many of the vegan Chinese stuff because they're the best at duplicating taste, texture, ect. of meat. As for whether the stuff taste good... let's just say I made that salad only twice because I didn't want to run out of the stuff... that's silly, but I somehow think that as long as I have some in the freezer I can hold onto the great taste, lol.
Thanks! I'm checking them out right now! (o:
Here is the link that May Wah sent me, these are all of their vegan products: http://www.vegieworld.com/cart/shopcontent.asp?type=products#VL

Correction, it looks like May Wah has changed many of their ingredients, there is a note on the front page which ask that you specify if you are vegan with each order. This might mean that they still offer the vegan alternatives. I hope they do, if not I'm going to be a little depressed :(
Check out vegecyber, I will email the folks at May Wah to see what is up.
