Sausage Crumbles
2 tablespoons soy sauce or Tamari
1 teaspoon sage
1 teaspoon onion powder
1/2 teaspoon thyme
1/4 teaspoon garlic powder
1/2 teaspoon fennel seeds
1/8 teaspoon cayenne pepper
1/8 teaspoon black pepper
salt, to taste
1 cup boiling water
1 cup textured soy protein
2-3 tablespoons extra virgin olive oil
1. In a bowl, mix together the first 9 ingredients (through salt). Pour the boiling water over the mixture.
2. Pour in the textured soy protein, mix with a fork, and let stand for 10 minutes. Fluff with a fork. Taste to see if more seasonings need to be added.
3. Put oil in a frying pan over medium heat. Add mixture, and fry until well browned. (you may need to add extra oil if the pan becomes too dry).
You now have delicious sausage crumbles! They taste great on pizza, in spaghetti sauce, and with scrambled tofu eggs.

This is so amazingly tasty! I could not believe how much it tasted like real sausage! I never really liked the store bought fake meats....but this is so easy and good. I am already imagining a million things to make with this recipe. Thanks!
I just made a half batch of this to put on pizza and it's so good! Didn't have garlic powder or onion powder so I used 2 crushed cloves of garlic instead. It definitely reminds me of the Italian sausage my parents used to get...I'm tempted to make spaghetti sauce for them with this instead of real sausage and see if they notice.
Adagio, I made my sausage crumbles with TVP flakes, not as big as chunks. The flakes are small. My grocery store sells them in bulk. Good Luck, this recipe is really easy and really tasty.
It's been years since I bought textured vegetable protein. But this recipe sounds very good indeed. I would really like to try it. Would someone please tell me, is the appropriate product a fine grade or chunky?

I made these last night and used them to make a 'sausage' and veggie pizza. These crumbles are DELICIOUS!!! I subbed an extra tablespoon of Bragg's amino's for the salt, used paprika instead of cayenne, and left out the fennel seeds. The result was fantastic. I was eating the stuff directly out of the pan -- even my toddler couldn't get enough! This is a recipe that I will use again and again!
Fried this up this morning, broiled it for 5 mins, just to get it crispy. Delish.....I'll never buy crumbles from the store again;well, not unless I run out of TVP :D
Just whipped these together in less than 10 minutes, very easy. I haven't fried them in the pan yet, but they taste very much like processed packaged sausage. I'm pleased with the results and looking forward to making this alot. The recipe is very versatile, I'm going to add Italian seasoning to the net batch to make pizza sausage. Thanks for the quick recipe. I liked it so much that I emailed it to my sister(she's also a vegan). ;D
My omni dad had to repeat "It tastes just like real sausage!" about a dozen times because he couldn't believe it! And he's never impressed with anything involving soy, so that is a big compliment to this recipe!
This recipe is great! I added 1 Tablespoon tomato paste and 1/2 teaspoon basil and it was delicious!
this was an awesome recipe, it really tasted just like real sausage crumbles. My meat-eating housemate said that it tasted just like the sausage they put on pizza. My only recommendation is don't use the extra salt; the soy sauce makes it plenty salty. Overall, a delicious, easy, and pretty cheap recipe...definitely cheaper than buying premade crumbles.
