Simply Awesome Shepherds Pie
1 (12 ounce) package burger-style crumbles
oil, as needed
1 large white onion, chopped
2 tablespoons all-purpose flour
salt and pepper, to taste
2/3 cup water
1 teaspoon gravy seasoning (I use Kitchen Bouquet)
6 large russet potatoes, peeled and chopped
1/2 cup nondairy milk (I use soy)
2-3 tablespoons margarine
1. Preheat broiler. In a large skillet, brown crumbles (can use some oil to prevent sticking). Then add onion, flour, water, gravy seasoning, and salt and pepper. Set mixture aside in a casserole dish.
2. Then prepare the mashed potato topping. Cook potatoes until tender; drain and add margarine, milk and salt and pepper. Mash, and place mashed potato mixture on top of crumble mixture.
3. Broil uncovered until potato topping is browned; about 10-15 minutes. You may want to bake/microwave further, so that dish is hot.
SO HOW'D IT GO?
Very yummy... Even meat- eater husband loved them ( of course I didn't tell him they were vegan/ until he noticed me eating them too)
Great recipe! Simple, quick and easy to make. Thanks for sharing!
I boiled celery, carrots, and peas with the potatoes-- I also used vegan gravy from a packet instead of making it using the flour, etc. Anyway, this truly was simply awesome! The kind of burger crumbles I used were the Smart Grounds brand :) I had my vegan boyfriend and my omnivore best friend over to eat it with me. My boyfriend ate until he was over-stuffed and my friend said he had a hard time telling the difference between this and the real thing. Both asked me to make it again real soon! Thanks!
I made this last night and it was AMAZING!! Thanx 4 sharing :D
This sounds delicious, my mom used to make a Sheperds Pie that I have dearly missed. How many "burgers" would you think I would need to crumble to amount to 1 package (since the size of the package isn't specified)? Thanks!
I loved this recipe, very simple and ideal for the person on the run! Great stuff! ;)b
I did enjoy this recipe. I thought the crumbles alone would be pretty boring so I added some onion and green beans. Next time I'll try some veggie gravy with it, but I'm glad I made it. My meat eating boyfriend was fooled because he asked what I was going to eat for dinner instead!
This is a great recipe, I was very suprised by the results because usually I don't like shepherd's pie (my dad's wife can't cook worth a damn). It tasted great and I would recommend this to anyone who wants a great meal and some left overs. I haven't tried this with my omni friends or family, but my guess is that they wouldn't be able to tell the difference. The only suggestion is to make a little more of the gravy and to put some more veggies in with the 'burger' crumbles. My boyfriend and I added corn, peas, and carrots. Also, this recipe goes great with the 'I can't believe it's vegan gravy' recipe. Thanks for the great recipe.
We make something similar very often. We add corn and peas to the crumbles once they go into the casserole. This is a great dish when you are craving "meat and potatoes".
Thanks for posting this recipe, it was delicious. I added one cup of frozen mixed vegetables (carrots, peas, and corn) and it turned out great. Very easy to make and I had all of the ingredients on hand. I haven't had Shepard's pie for a long, long time and I would say that this is just aas good, if not better, than the Shepard's pie my mom makes with ground beef.
