Tofu Mozzarella Sticks
What you need:
2-3 tablespoons canola oil
1/2 cup panko (Japanese style) bread crumbs
1 tablespoon dried basil
1 tablespoon dried oregano
1 (14 ounce) package extra firm tofu, drained and cut to 1/2" strips
1/4 cup nondairy milk (I use soy)
3-4 tablespoons nutritional yeast
What you do:
1. Heat oil in sauté pan. Mix bread crumbs with dried herbs. Dip tofu strips into milk then dredge in nutritional yeast; just enough to coat lightly.
2. Dip strips back into milk and roll into mixture of bread crumbs and herbs.
3. Lightly fry coated strips just until golden brown on both sides. Let set on rack or paper towel to drain any excess oil.
Serve with side of your favorite marinara. These are great for appetizers on game day!

SO HOW'D IT GO?
I also found that it tastes way way better if you use the uncheese mix instead of nutritional yeast. I had to sprinkle some on to make them edible on their own but then again I didn't have marinara...
Also, I just used regular bread crumbs.
I'm thinking that adding garlic powder to the breading might also be a good idea.
I gave this recipe 4 stars bc I think it can be really good with a few changes. I found the sticks to be almost tasteless-- just breaded tofu, which I did not find enjoyable. I would add seasoning salt to the breading (perhaps 1 Tbsp) and add the nutritional yeast to the breading since the 2nd milk dip removes most of the yeast anyway-- as many posters have already pointed out.
To keep all the breading on, I would freeze the sticks after breading them, then deep fry them.
They were sooo good! I did change maybe a vital ingredient though :)>>> Instead of tofu I got a block of Follow Your Heart Mozzarella and cut it into stick sized strips, now this is where its at! Sooo good.
The recipie was good but did not remind me of Mozzarella Sticks. :-\. Thanks though.
These were yummy! I couldn't find vegan bread crumbs so I used whole wheat flour and cornmeal. I added salt and paprika to the mixture and combined the nutritional yeast with the flour (as suggested by previous reviews). I dipped and dredged twice then fried. They turned out pretty good. I may try to marinate the tofu chunks in a little Bragg's aminos next time to add a little more flavor. My munchkin thought they were awesome with ketchup!
Yeah all the yeast was rinsed off if you do the second dip!

Very yummy!!! I agree that nutritional yeast needs to be added to breadcrumb mix. Will keep this recipe forsure!
These were good. I found it easier to just add the Nutritional Yeast to the bread crumbs, as the second dip in the soymilk rinsed of the yeast. Yum!
so good (from a tofuphobic). i froze/thawed the tofu first to get a meatier texture. cold leftovers the next day were surprisingly good too.
