Sexual Content Discussion :)

Let's carry over from the chit-chat board discussion...

Is it okay to post sexual content on a vegweb/message board? How far is too far?
Is it okay, considering children who use the internet may be able to access it?
Is it okay if what you're describing involves another person who may not want the issue discussed in public?
Is innuendo/sexual references ok in non-sexual topics?

I don't think this is news to anyone, but "the internet was made for porn", as they say.  Having children stumble across something sexual on our tiny, miniscule corner of the internet is just absurd.  That's the least of our worries.  If kids want to find sex on the internet, they will indeed.  And vegweb isn't exactly crawling with 10 year olds.  We have an awfully inflated image of ourselves, vegweb.

No one uses real names on vegweb.  We use "GC," "the friend," etc.  I don't think there is a concern there either.

Again, I defer to the wise PPK for this matter.  PPK is full of TMI, sex talk, bathroom talk, etc.  People deal.  I don't like that people post about their eating disorders on here, but I look away because I know it is not healthy to read such things for me.

You enter a forum at your own will.  It is your will to leave.  See the rules.  I wouldn't stick around with a group of omnis who were discussing their last hunting trip, for example.  I would excuse myself.  That's life.

I think the accusations that sex comes up in every thread are highly inflated.  I can think of very few (actually, I can't think of any) examples where someone just busted out with a sexual description while we were talking about recipes.  Come on now.

What bothers me the most is, when you feel that you don't understand why people behave a certain way because it's so radically different from your attitude, then you should ASK about it.  Just have an open discussion.  If you're not up for discussion, then you probably shouldn't mention it.

yeah i think if the degree of 'sex talk' that goes on on this forum is the worst thing a kid stumbles across on the internet then i wouldnt be too worried.

and guess what I DON"T HAVE KIDS!! which means I DON'T HAVE TO WORRY ABOUT WHAT MY IMAGINARY KIDS SEE ON THE INTERNET!!  that's what parents are for! and parental internet control programs!  people need to monitor what their kids see on tv and online and if i wanted that responsibility then i would have em myself!  it's not as if we're going onto a nickelodeon website and discussing 'special friends'..

I'm giggling thinking of all of the euphamisms.  "And then Sponge Bob became Square Pants and his Nickhead eyed The Angry Beavers."

Ha!  This tickles me.
In a non-sexual way.

hell, I'd be thrilled if the worst thing my kid looked at online was the vegweb orgasm thread!   Let's get real, if kids want to see porn or anything else not suitable for kids, they will find definitely find a way!!

I dont think the original thread was focused on children seeing sexual talk.  I got the impression that some people come here to read about food and vegan culture, and that if threads are started about sexual topics, that sexual topics stay in that thread and not crossover into a thread about, lets say, macaroni and cheeze or animal rescues.  The mention of children and students seemed like an extra thing to think about when it came to the topic but not the main point.

if sex had came up in the animal rescue thread, that would have been strange, or the mac and cheeze for that matter.  Maybe I'm wrong, but I don't remember sex coming up in the food threads, just chit chat.

I don't want any hard feelings and I won't post in any threads that weren't ok'd by PP to talk about sex.  I think some people have a hard time with her stating her opinion and then saying "I don't want to debate this" end of story......kinda like my mom used to treat me when I was 11

That may be what is supposed to happen but how closely is that policy monitored or enforced?  Just searching the first three pages (24 pages in total..I believe) of search results for 18-20 year olds on vegweb, 21 people were under the age of 18 when they registered and 8 of the 21 I can clearly remember using the forums and/or chat areas including Courth, Shea, ponycakes!, blithering idiot, AshleyKimball, EggAllergyinMD and xRyanVegx.  Were they stopped from using the public areas?  No.  Did they talk about being in high school or being under age at times?  Yes, some of them did.

What good is having a policy stating you have to be 18 years of age when putting in a birth date is not required?!

just a note.  i dont know if there are sexual inuendos in the mac and cheeze or animal rescue threads.  i was just sayin.  that i've seen sexual inuendos in some non-sexual threads and those were just the first two non sexual threads i could think of, not saying that there are sexual inuendos in them.  ok.  continue!

I know what your saying, I didn't mean to sound like I was taking offense to that.  I guess my point was sex talk was in chit chat, and doesn't sex come up sometimes in chit chat in our everyday lives?

Honestly, there has been more sex talk in the last 2 days then in the last month.  Did that thread really help????

Ha. I was going to bring up myself, Mirrya. It's not hard to bypass. In my defense, I was only about 8 months off when I registered.

Same!  I honestly can't think of any.  That's why I asked for examples.  Visual learner here.

I feel that, in light of certain threads, and in light of the original post, it is clear which threads we are talking about here.  When the statement is along the lines of "I can't understand how people treat sex as a purely physical thing," it's pretty obvious which recent conversations are being referred to.  And as a party in those conversations, I take offense.

I won't bring sexual conversation outside of those flagged threads because I don't want hard feelings either, but I do relish my right to converse about sex in an adult forum with other adults.  I find such conversation healthy, beneficial, and fun.  In fact, I think a lack of frank sexual discussion is responsible for many of the problems surrounding sex/sexual health.  I feel quite strongly about this.

That was my point.  :)  That it's really easy for people to bypass.

Neither am I but that doesn't mean I can't watch what I say or post when I know there are minors using the board.  I do the same thing is real life.  I wouldn't not stop a kid from running out in the road just because it's the parents job to keep their kid from getting hurt.
