Anyone NOT going to prom??

I'm not going to go to my senior prom, which is in May. People give me crazy looks when I tell them this...Instead my boyfriend & I are going to go to the city (San Francisco) & go to a nice vegetarian restaurant and then stay at a nice hotel. Is anyone else not going to their senior prom/didn't go to their senior prom?? What were your experiences?

I'm not!  :-D

No, I totally understand.  I didn't go to any dance BUT my senior ball, and then it was more to accompany a friend who felt lonely--I didn't even bring my boyfriend.  I bought the cheapest dress I could find for about $15 at the last minute and went.  It was largely un-fun.  Proms are so awkward and funny, really.  But since then I have gone to a couple formals and I enjoy them more.  I like getting dressed up, I just really didn't care for most of the people in my high school.  :-\

I went to my prom - I think the only dance I went to in high school - with a bunch of my girlfriends. And it was only fun because I went with friends. We didn't bother with anyone else, just danced and hung out with each other. It was fun getting dressed up and pretty, and I doubt I would have had a good time if I'd had a date.

Oh, and the dress I got, like KMK, was really cheap (because I'm like that) - got it at a thrift store. But it was actually very pretty!

Proms and dances are only fun when you're with the right people. I can totally understand not wanting to go or take part in that ridiculous high school ritual.

I was invited to prom all four years in high school, and I said no each time.  It was totally not my thing.

If you're going to spend the money anyway, a trip to the city sounds much better.  Where are you going to eat?  There are a bunch of restaurants in the city that I want to check out, like Millenium and Herbivore.  If you haven't decided yet, here's a list of restaurants by neighborhood.

Oooh, hh was one popular gal!  ;) I went to Jr. prom..but boycotted Sr. prom. I think I only went to 2-3 dances my whole like 18 years of school.

I wish I never went to prom.  Spending $100+ on a tux to wear one night.  Spending another $100+ on a limo you spend all of 2 hours in.  Then you get to the place and find out there's more chaperones than students there.  Of course there is always the discussion about which field the after party is going to be (yea, I'm from a small town).

Basically, I equate prom to being similar to new year's.  You expect it to be this amazing experience, you have all these expectations, but mostly it's just a let down.

I actually went to all of our school's formal dances (6!) and had fun every time.  But, unlike most it sounds like, I really liked my high school and yeah, we had the normal crap, but overall everyone got along and the dances were always really fun.  It was fun getting dressed up, going to dinner, dancing, and then hanging out at someone's house until morning watching movies, playing pool, etc.

On the flip side, my little brother only went to one formal and hated it.  They really aren't his thing and his friends aren't into it either.  I think if my friends hadn't been into it, I wouldn't have had any fun.  It all depends, but I think it's dumb that people think you have to go to your senior prom.  San Fran sounds like a BLAST and I'm uber jealous ;)  See, I'm from Montana, and there weren't really any cool places to go if you didn't go to prom, so that's just what we all did for something to do.

I went to all of them too, though in hindsight, most of them were pretty boring.  I made my own dresses and none of my dates ever showed up in a limo so it didn't cost that much.  Of course, that was back in the Jurassic.

Nah.  I had a large group of friends who also circulated in other groups.  We were like the etcetera group because we were made up of sports, drama, skateboarders, musicians, academic, etc.  people who kept trying to set me up with their friends from the other groups.

As far as it goes, I never seriously dated anyone in high school because I didn't want them to meet my parents.  I lived in a small-ish town, so it would have been inevitable.  Instead, I hung with my mob and got into enough trouble with them to make up for not dating.

I never went to prom... I don't regret it. At my school it was more of a popularity contest than a fun event.

I'm not going to prom this year! he he

I went to like four proms, too. I didn't have an especially great time at any of them and I dreaded them all. My favorite thing about them was that my little sister kicks major booty at doing hair and I had a lot of hair to do fun things with.  :) I spent next-to-nothing on all of them adn Im glad for that. My school only had JR/Sr proms, so my sophomore year I went with my JR boyfriend. got my first kiss...   ;) more like: http://www.websmileys.com/sm/obscene/eck16.gif I bought a cheap dress that year, and we had to do this ridiculous fashion show before prom, where you went on the stage of the school auditorium so everyone could see you. I felt so self conscious! Jr year I went to mine and to a friends. I wore a dress I "just had around" to mine and that prom was "OK" I didn't go with anyone but I danced with a few friends. For my friends prom, I made a tie-dyed dress (per his request). His prom was really lame cause my friend just had me sit at his table all night, he didnt even really introduce me to anyone. It looked like way more fun than any of my my schools proms, though...bigger budget?. I ended up making mosaics out of the confetti on the tables and building things with my food.  ;) While sitting there in my freaking tie-dye dress, looking as conspicuous as the day is long.  :o I retrospect, I shoulda called my dad to come pick me up and told my friend he was a jerk. lol At least i got my picture on the  front page of the paper.  >:(

My senior prom, I seriously didn't even want to go...cause that year sucked, plus i was freaking sick of proms. I went cause I thought I might regrat it later if I didn't.  :-\ I hardly remember it. I think I got my dress at good will for like 7 bucks. I just threw my hair back into a  ponytailish thing.

That said, I think I woulda' had WAY more fun going on a brief trip like what you are doing. The only reason I went to those proms is because you supposedly "regret it late"r if you don't...So if you have something BETTER to replace those memories with, go for it!

i went to my junior prom because my friends band was playing.  for my senior prom, i got dressed up, drove all of my friends to the prom and then went to a punk show!  it was lots of fun!  even though i didnt have a ticket, i still went in and hung out and said hi for 10-15 minutes, then left.  thats all i needed!  the best part was the feeling of ditching the prom 10 minutes in to it.  awesome!

We're going to go to the restaurant Greens for dinner! My boyfriend's mom has been there and she told us it was awesome, and his stepdad works for the Sheraton Hotel so he's gonna get us some type of discount on some hotel (we haven't found out which one yet). Soo...the whole night shouldn't cost too much. I also found this really simple, pretty dress from Macy's that started out at $125 but it was on sale for $16 WAHHOOOOOOO!!  :D

It's so nice to hear all of your stories!

I went there once with my mom and sister. It is a stupendous restaurant, though a little pricey. We just ordered appetizers and shared because we couldn't afford to all buy entrees.  :>
We were there kind of a while ago, but when we went they had a tiny "Greens" deli counter at the entrance of the restaurant, which sold desserts and small entrees and coffee and such. I might suggest getting dessert there if you decide to have dessert, because they don't charge you for table service. Then again, it's a night out with your boyfriend. Live it up!

Where do you live? Because San Fransisco is "the city" for me too.

Your trip to S.F. sounds like a lot more fun and memorable than the prom would be. I love the city, haven't been since my tenage years though. We hope to make a trip there this summer with our kiddos. We live about an hour away.

Anyway, I didn't go to my prom either, but looking back, don't regret it one bit.

Way to go on the dress. I do love a good bargain! ;)b Have a wonderful time!

I totally agree with you Weallfalldown! Ever since I stepped onto high school soil I did not want to go to prom. Just like you said, it's not my scene & a huge waste of money.

In a town that  technically does not exist due to it's ridiculously insignificant population.

I skipped out on my senior prom and I don't regret it one bit. It just wasn't my scene and I saw it as a waste of money. Instead I hung out with friends and my then current partner being reckless & mocking our peers. Way more fun if you ask me.

Anything that involves blasting hip-hop music, sweaty teenagers and socialization is a noonono.  Not worth the money in the least.
