No, it's always VEE-gan. People pronounce it "vej-uhn" mistakenly, including dictionary.com. In my opinion. :P

I'm voting for neither, but the second one is funny. Have you heard someone say VAAgEEn? That could get dangerous. There could be vAAgEENo and vAAgEEna, if there were masculine and feminine forms. I'm not sure how I'd feel about being a vAAgEEna. ;D

Yes, I've often heard 'vehgun' or 'vehjun' from those not familiar with the term.
Only 1 correct way, as KMK and hh said...'vEEgan.'

I concur, it is vEE-gan. For the longest time (and sometimes still), my mom pronounced it vAY-gan.

While we're on the topic...
One of my shirts says "go veg" (with a pig and white flag..), so..you know I always thought 'veg'...like vegetable or vegetarian....but then that wouldn't be the abbreviation for vegan..b/c then you would say what...go.."veeG?" One of my professors (a little odd) read it out loud one time..and said "go veeJ." :hrmm:

That was so WEIRD. I hit quote to reply to you, Tweety...and I was going to say that I probably say it like veegun..since I'm not saying veegAn, very clearly...but they basically sound the same when I say them...
BUT, when I hit quote...your post had changed! I realize it's b/c you modified/edited it...but it was so strange to read one thing, then see something totally different after I hit the quote button a few seconds later! I was just like, ???.

Actually, I think that's close to how I say it too. It's hard to determine the last syllable - do I say "an" or "in"? I dunno. ???

But if you are starting out new, please say "vee-gan." Like the others have said, people tend to say it those other ways out of ignorance. Any vegan media pronounce it "vee-gan," and I suspect the people who first made the term did as well.

LMAO!! Did I start something or what? Funny story, the lady that was our nanny to my girls for a few years said VAAGEENA!! I grinned everytime she said it. She wasn't talking about a way of eating though.

In the UK it's Vee-gan. In the rest of Europe it's vay-gan. As in the star, Vega. Or Las Vegas.
Since "vega" means "plains" in Spanish, some people here in Spain think a "vegano" is a plains-dweller. ;D But then here raw foodists are called "crudivores". Crooooodivores, not "crud-ivores."

I am from the midwest so to me it is VEEG-AN (long e as in seek, the g is a gha shound as in game, or gate, and the a is a short a as in bat).
But after looking it up on dictionary.com I don't say it right:
vej-uhn
so the g is supposed to sound like a j, as in junk, or junior, hmmm, I like the way I say it better.
