Equus

has anyone read this? my BF read it in highschool but doesnt remember much of it obviously because nobody i know ever read the books assigned in highschool.

but anyway, i got interested because Dan Radcliffe (Harry Potter) did the play, but the plot line has peaked my interest. is every copy of this written as a play though? i'm more into novels than plays, but am not opposed to reading plays as i've got the complete works of shakespeare and enjoy that very much

so i was just wondering if anyone had read it and what they thought of it.

thanks :)

Did he go to a public or private school?  I went to a public school in a conservative town, so The Pearl was pushing it.

I recently picked up Equus, following a recommendation from a friend who saw the play on stage, and plan to read after I get through another lengthy novel I am engaged in right now.

The award-winning play by Peter Shaffer, as you probably already know,  won rave reviews from The New York Times and others and has been a stage hit. It delves into the psyche of a teen stableboy who blinded six horses by driving steel spokes through their eyes.

They did this play in my university in the early 80's. The audiences didn't like it and it had a very negative effect on the psyche of the young man who played the boy. Then later they did "Night of the Iguana" which he was also in, and that did for him. He had a nervous breakdown and tried to commit suicide. I guess plays you take part in can really get inside your head.

Sareia, it was originally a script, never a novel, so yes, you'll only find it in play form. They did a movie of it, not one I'd care to see. I don't know if they show the blinding scene...we can hope not.

i've looked at those pictures a few times before now but its good to see them again ;) i can just imagine how hot-flash inducing he'll be by the time they reach making the movie for Harry Potter 7 lol (this coming from a rupert grint fan)

anyway, thanks all for the info. thanks for letting me know it's only in play form yabbitgirl, i'm sorry to hear about the man at your university, that's rather disturbing and makes me wonder how many others have changed since playing the main role

it would seem Dan Radcliffe came out okay, i would hope, he has a promising career ahead of him.

haha!  i went to school in a farm town turned "new money" town
where the baptist deacons smoked on the church doorsteps while their sons were nursing hangovers at home
luckily i had an honors lit teacher who didn't care about the school board, 'cause she knew she was so great, she'd easily get another job, so
we read lots of books that got the PTO up in arms
viva los libiros!

funny how freedom of speech/expression, or the reading of them isn't a right extended to highschool students

I think he has had a much more positive experience with the play, and also...people really wanna see him take it all off! I know I would have a hard time concentrating on anything else...*sigh* I'm so lecherous...

Okay, why would he do that?!!?
That reminds me of a cat that used to roam around the neighborhood I lived in on Fort Sill, OK. About two years before I got there, some kids got bored and set the poor kitty on fire. Then they took the burnt match and shoved out his right eye.  :'( He lived, obviously, but he was blind in that eye and he had patches where his hair wouldn't grow back. I fed him ham and lots of food, and I remember crying more than once when I would see him being teased or prodded by other kids. No one would adopt the poor guy, or even take him to a shelter. It was so sad...

The reason why he blinds the horses is the whole plot mystery of the play.  It's an excellent play, however it is very dark and sexual.  I read it in college.  For those of you unfamiliar with this piece who are worried about animals being hurt or used in the theatre, all of the horses are played by humans.  In no way does the play encourage violence against animals.

Might I just add that Potter has grown into a FINE young man. Mmmmmmmmm, yummy. I'm only 24. He's 18. It could still work between us.  :D

And, yes, the play is dark, sexual, disturbing. But, surprisingly quite good if the actors can pull it off.
