Fund Raising Ideas

Hi Everyone!
So I attended my first campus Students for Animal Rights meeting and we need to come up with fund raising ideas! We do get some money from the college, but of course we would like to have more to do bigger stuff--so, does anyone have any experience fund raising, or have any good ideas?
Thanks all!

Hey Capture -
Here was a site that I found when I did a google search for university organization fundraising ideas:
http://www.plu.edu/~sil/clubs-organizations/fund-raising.html
I was trying to think of what our student groups have done. We've had everything from haunted houses at Halloween, candygrams (students send candy and a note to each for a small price - this probably only works well at a small campus like ours though), "Best Legs" contest (use men and women), a Cinderfella competition (men's version of Miss America - in drag, one of the VPs did it one year), special dinners with entertainment (i.e. the Choir sells tickets for a nice meal and they provide the musical show that night), bake sales, etc.
Hope that helps!
well. as the treasure-keeper of a very successful student organization, let me tell you about my boat (life aquatic reference, sorry)
since my group is politically oriented, last spring we had a dinner event, where we invideted lots of local politicians and people with money. we also had nancy pelosi's daughter as a guest speaker. we made about a grand in profit, but it was only our first year doing this. head's up though, it took about six months to plan and reserve space and catering.
as far as animal rights oriented, you could do something similar but more low-key, and vegan!
i know of a group on my campus that has free vegan potlucks once per week.
you could also sell delicious baked goods.
another great idea is to get t-shirts, and print a bunch of extra ones to sell at a couple dollars profit.
Thanks for all the great ideas! I especially like the "Cinderalle pagent"! I think i just might have to bring that one up--that would go over pretty big on campus!
It's huge on our campus and everyone loves it . . . even the guys get into it! Last year our Director of Campus Recreation did it and won - his wife did all of his make-up and thought it was so much fun. Tickets are relatively cheap - $5 a person, I think. It's now been done 4 consecutive years and keeps getting bigger and bigger.
My friend just contacted me today and asked me to help him fundraise on the street here in Amsterdam for an animal rights cause. He's an artist, so he's going to make drawings/paintings on the spot and sell them, and we're going to donate everything we take in to a cause. I have to speak to him about it tomorrow, but I'm thinking something like Sea Shepherd. I love their mission.
The baked goods thing is another great idea.
Could you do something with a local animal shelter? Like, rent the dogs out to college students for the day (pre-screened and responsible college students of course). I know if I had to live on campus without pets, it would get to me after awhile. Everyone needs a little furriness in their life. This way, students profit from the animal company (for a fee), the animals get out and about to socialise, and you can raise a bit of funds. I wonder could that work?
Or maybe along the same line, start a dogwalking service in the area, where your group goes around and walks dogs for people who work during the day. I do it here, and let me tell you. Its a money maker. Then again, this is the city, and there tends to be more of a need for it in cities.
Good luck, whatever you try! Let us know whats going on with your group! That kind of stuff interests me.
In college, I got a porta-potty company to donate a toilet for a weekend. We then had various college radio staffers sit in there (and broadcast) for various periods of time.
It was eye-catching (smack dab in front of the student union), and people feel bad for someone stuck in a port-a-potty so we ended up with some good spare change!
Just try to think of something attention getting, the rest will fall into place hhopefully.
Oh! Unrelated idea: Vegan tailgate?
What worked well for my environmental club was a bottle and can drive. Just flyer a little saying you'll be stopping by sometime on Saturday or Sunday, and believe me, college students will have boxes of cans and bottles they'll want to get rid of. I don't remember the exact amount, but we ended up getting more than a couple of hundred dollars with only a few helpers for about 6 hours work. I went to a smaller state school too.
Great ideas everyone! I really like the one of "renting" shelter animals for the day! I'm not sure how to go about that, but one of our members works for the michigan humane socitey, so maybe she'll be able to figure something out!
Thanks everyone!
