Grrr...RANT!
My uncle (by marriage) is really getting on my nerves. For example, if we're out ordering food in a group and my aunt is actually placing the order, I'll ask her to inquire about the kind of vegetables available. (Sorry, I don't like zucchini, eggplant, olives, raw onions etc) While she's doing this he will interject with something dumb like "What does it matter? Veggies are veggies, she has to eat it. Just get whatever they have". Does he think I'm deaf? And what's with the "she"/third person reference. Of course it's all said with a sneer like I should just accept whatever non-meats are around me. Like being veg*n implies we have no right to have likes and dislikes. Irks me to no end. He's mighty defensive considering I don't give a fu** what he eats. I never impose my lifestyle on anyone. Never. >:(
I hate when people call it a diet too. My parents always talk about me "dieting." It really belittles the whole thing.
I know it!! I have a friend who keeps referring to it as "a vegan kick." :-\ I love her so much, and I know she's not trying to be rude, but it totally gives the impression that I'm doing this like a "South Beach kick" or an "Atkins kick" to lose weight or something... I know I haven't been vegan that long, but come on! (I don't think that it helps that I was a vegetarian probably 5+ times in my life before finally going vegan... But I'm here for good now! :D) And it is totally, 100% a lifestyle that I love & believe in, and not "a kick" that I feel obligated to stick to. Frustrating.

That happens with my grandmother. "are you still on your diet?" With me saying "it's not a diet it's a lifestyle."
Also her telling people that her vegan granddaughter can't eat FLOUR on her "diet". ??? Don't know where she came up with that one.

I think because in her mind it IS a weight-loss attempt "diet", so to her mind you would be cutting out flour too...unless you maybe made something with wholewheat flour and she tasted/saw you make it?
Grandmothers, OK...we expect the elderly to not be au fait with "new" ideas...but one's own peers...difficult.
Sigh.

Some folks at work thought I don't eat sugar because I don't eat the birthday sweets we have once a month. The birthday celebration is this Wednesday and I'm taking one of my cupcakes to have while everyone else has traditional fare. (Not have sugar? If they only knew... :D)
