Help I'm new here and not vegan

I found this site from my doctor. I found out today I wont be allowed to have dairy for one solid year and I am allergic to soy milk so I drink rice milk. Need help with alternatives to things like ice cream heard about good karma and cheese and yogurt ( with no soy_, pudding and other things. I don't eat red meat, but I do eat a little bit of chicken and fish.

The best advice on the dairy is to avoid all the substitutes for a while, except the rice milk. "Ice cream" and "cheese" will taste wrong to you a for a while.

I'm a little bit confused, though. What all do you need to be avoiding? Just dairy, or eggs, meat, and fish as well? It's none of my business, but I'm just curious: why are you not allowed to have dairy for a year?

you'll probably want to start making a lot of your own substitutes if you really want that stuff.

like you can make ice ream out of cashews...

same with yogurts and milks. i would say try looking up raw food recipes, they tend to use lots of nuts as replacements!

cool that your doctor directed you here!

for non-dairy ice cream i'd recommend Rice Divine (formerly Rice Cream); their carrot cake flavor is great. I find that the Rice Dream brand is more sugary/watery (like a lot of rice milks), and Rice Divine is better. There are also ice cream sandwiches and novelties made from rice that you can find at health food stores, though I'm not sure that they're completely soy free.

For milk subs, you aren't limited to rice milk: there's almond, oat, hazelnut, hemp, and sometimes even cashew milk; if you've got a large enough grocery store nearby, you'll probably at least be able to find rice, oat, and almond milk (look in the unrefrigerated section).

I know there's rice cheese substitutes out there, but I don't think I've ever tried them - though a cheese substitute, I believe they still have a milk protein in them (for consistency). I'm not sure how strict your no-dairy diet is, though, so you may not be able to eat them either.

If you're really going to miss the other dairy products in your life too, it's worth looking up some soy-free recipes, like hespedal said. You can also use cashews to make some pretty good "cheese" (see recipes on here).

I am pretty much in the same boat as you. My baby (12 months old) can't have dairy or soy, and since I'm breastfeeding her, I can't have dairy or soy either! I'm still looking for ways to feed the family without feeling like we're missing out.

SS... like others have said, there are lots of differentmilk subs besides soy out there.
for other protein sources, there is seitan (wheat gluten), beans, mushrooms, legumes, nuts and nut butters, grains, especially quinoa.
there are many "cheezes" that use nuts and nutritional yeast, and no soy.
there are "ice creams" that use frozen bananas/fruit and/or a "milk", you could also make "ices".

you might want to post another thread, others will have some great advice!
