Hoping for change...
OK, so the one way to make sure my husband will dig in his heels is to suggest he read a particular book or watch a particular film. Not only things to do with animals etc but anything...I've been waiting almost a yr for him to watch 3 Colours: White with me, simply because I don't understand the mime in the last scene which holds the key to the resolution of the film!
Soooo, it's no good giving him a book or a documentary and hoping it will have an effect because he won't give it a chance.
But. Once again, ARTE TV (joint venture France/Germany satellite channel) is running a series of docs on farm animals. They showed an "organic" pig farm in Denmark and were like touting how good and "natural" it was. (Rather unpleasant details follow). Except the sows are only allowed to live for 2 adult years, all of which time they are either in pig or nursing. (And you know there ain't no "retired sow's home" for them to go to!) And piglets who get hurt by other piglets are simply isolated for a couple of days and then killed "to stop the suffering"--no mention of veterinary care of any kind, even for a piglet who "might have broken his leg---but also might have only sprained it." And of course the piggeries are filthy! A new batch of piglets are turned into a piggery whose floors are still covered with sludge excrement from the last lot....lovely.
So anyway, DH records this and we watch it and he asks me if I'm interested in seeing the rest of the series. Like the good little veggie I am, I agree, and remark in passing on how dirty the piggeries were and how that doesn't seem very sanitary or very healthy for these "organic" animals.
He remarked on the apparently total lack of vet care, but of course the grower is thinking in terms of a 6 mos turnover rate, anyway.
THEN he said..."If I had a farm I'd only grow vegetables and stuff. I couldn't raise animals like that...it's too cruel." He actually said it.
You bet your sweet bippy I want to see the rest of the series---because I want HIM to see it.
And hope and pray he sees the point of a lot of things I don't do a lot of talking about, just living by.
wow yabbit, that sounds like a great series. It's really good that your husband is interested in watching it with you too!

Being an example is the best you can do for anyone. :)
That's wonderful news Yabbit!!! I hope he comes around to the veggie side! :)
Baby steps, right!?!? ;) I guess I really lucked out when my husband was open to eating vegetarian and eventually vegan. He didn't grumble or groan about the change but he cheated alot more than I did... of course, when I wasn't around! What a stinker! ::)
