are you ready to use it in your everyday vocabulary?
i'm not sure i'm quite there yet. but i've been trying it out today.
this place sure is a hot mess today.
thoughts?
I only use it when describing Lindsay Lohan
;D
Great question. I've not used the phrase but my boss at work uses "hot mess", "hot second", and "hot moment". All of course depending on the situation.
Examples:
"The Gulf Coast is a hot mess."
"Hold your horses for a hot second."
"I'm going to sit down for a hot moment."
I have no idea what it means, so an emotional response is not occurring.
I say it all the time, probably too much

I never use the term... but hot mess = Lindsay Lohan all the way... Crack whore would be a good description for her as well LOL
Love this phrase.
Love this phrase.
Me too! Because really.... some people/situations really are a hot f-ing mess.
I almost never use it myself, but I often enjoy its use.
I associate "hot mess" with really flamboyant transvestites and drag queens, particularly the "impassibles," and those who perform at drag shows/perform poorly at drag shows... Lots of makeup, sequins/feathers/vinyl, and facial stubble and/or broad shoulders, lip-synching Cher songs and whatnot...
Also, "hot mess" = skanks like Lindsay Hohan and Tara Reid, etc.
but I don't really like them, only like making fun of them.
now, trannies and drag queens, however, I genuinely do like.
mmm, hot mess.

This.
I feel good about it.
not a fan, wouldn't use it, I would feel like a poser....
My kitchen faces due south. It's July. Today we had 42ºC in the shade. I had to make lunch.
That kitchen was one hot mess.
I actually feel like it sounds kind of hickish. Like I could imagine someone saying ''he's fixin' to get 'imself into a hot mess, I tell ya. 'f he's got any sense 'bout 'im, he'll get outta it right quick, good Lord willin' an the crick don't rise. Bless his heart. (no offense to those who use these phrases, I am just not fond of them. Maybe it's because I hear them so much).

wow this made me laugh!!! that's why i don't say it... it sounds too "news-ey" like "i just tweeted" kinda BS

Actually it isn't a compliment. When someone is a "mess" they are a disaster, impossible, can't do anything with them. So I guess a "hot mess" would be "mad, bad and dangerous to know." I'm not planning on using it either. It's kind of like Brits who overuse the phrase "wild child." No, thank you.
the first time i heard this phrase someone was jokingly using it to describe diarrhea. I can't see it any other way now.
