I feel like shit.............and I'm going to rant!
OK so today has been a shit day for me, but not quite as shit as it was for the 16 people I had to layoff today. I really hate doing this and my great boss who was "going to be there for you man" decided he had a super important meeting to attend all day long, leaving it up to yours truly to break the news to each of them individually.
The thing that really bugs me about it is this country's health care system is it is dependent on you having a job or being able to pay $700 for COBRA when you don't have a job!!! Not one of these people did anything wrong but merely were the victims of the poor economy so if they don't find a job before the end of September (when their coverage ends) or can afford $700 a month for COBRA they will be one of the 20% of people in America without health care insurance. Leader of the free world? Bollocks it is.
Beer is needed!
I feel for you, laying off people is hard! I always hated doing it.. it's even harder when it's stupid company decisions not any way related to the performance of the employee. I'd recommend something harder than beer ;)
Where I work we're threatened with layoffs every few years because of the economy. It's last hired, first laid off by classification. I've been here for seven years, but I'm the last hired in my classification, so I'm always stressed. From someone on the other side of the desk, it feels good to know that it affects you, too. If someone has to lay me off, I want them to feel bad. I think you're right on track for the reaction those poor people would have wanted from you. And yes, definitely something more stiff than beer.

I can only speak for myself but I hate doing layoffs, I have done probably 100 or so in my career. Performance related ones are easier. I does affect me, I did not sleep the last two nights. I was walking my dog at 2am last night going through everything in my head.
I started at 8am and did not get done until 5:30pm I could not eat lunch.
It's physically and emotionally draining and it did not sit well with me at all.
I should have picked up some scotch!

Yeah, it sucks even more that it was dumped on you. I've broken down before doing it! I always thought it would get easier the next time but it never did. *cheers*
get t the liquor store immediately....you need that scotch!
That really sucks.
So, GESC.....are we a bit hungover today after our beer and/or scotch binge?
The only people I've ever had to let go deserved it. I can't imagine how horrible it must feel to have to fire perfectly competent people. You are not the monster here, just the messenger.

No hang over here, ate something before going to bed and up at 5:30am like every morning!
Don't feel so bad today, like everything else, life just goes on!

That's because it's the anticipation of it that's the gut-wrencher. Once it's over you don't have to anticipate it anymore.
