I need convincing

I got $600 as a graduation/birthday gift from my grandmother. I've been considering getting a Vitamix for a while now, but they are very expensive and I am a saver, not a spender. Anything that costs more than $20 or so requires quite a bit of deliberation with myself. I try to talk about it with my husband, but he always says "just get it" and doesn't give me the conversation I want. I could invest $600 in our new house fund--but I could also get a Vitamix. Everything I hear about it is great.
So please, just one more time, everyone tell me how great the Vitamix is--I need something to push me over the hill (of course anyone with a negative experience, go ahead and tell me that too). Thanks!

It took me a long while to decide to buy mine as well, because as you said....they're EXPENSIVE! Howe'ver, I'm not at all sorry that I bought it. I love my Vitamix, and I use it nearly every day.
I find it very helpful for making smooth sauces (e.g. uncheese-like sauces)...no lumps! It purees tofu like a charm...no grittiness. It also makes incredible smoothies. It makes soup. It makes nut butters. You can get a blade/ attachment so you can grind your own flours.
It's kinda like my food processor...I resisted plopping down the money for that for a really long time. Now I can't imagine life without it.

I remember before getting a Vitamix, going through a blender about once every 2 years or so. Also, not being happy with grainy almond spread or gritty tofu. The Vitamix is great at really making these types of things totally smooth! Now I love to make tofu smoothies & dips & NancyZen's almond creme for pie topping.
Thanks for everyone's replies. I'll probabaly get one later this week. I just need to sit on it for a little while longer--spending this kind of money is hard for me to do. :-)

ebay and amazon sometimes have better prices. That is a lot of money. Personally, I believe in spending more for quality things. I just spent $1900 on a good refridgerator that hopefully will last a long time. Howe'ver, when I spend that kind of money it has to be on something that I'm going to use frequently, not just sit on the counter.
If you're sure you're going to use it, why not buy a quality product. The idea of the money was a gift right? You're not going to be out anything.
(I'm more of a spender than a saver, but I do have money automatically deducted into savings and investments, but spend the rest. Life is a balance between discipline and realizing it's too short not to enjoy your gifts.)
I love my vitamix. I got it for christmas so I have only had it a few months. When I first got it I used it every single day! Sometimes twice even.
Now I have cut back slightly as I am trying to loose weight and daily fruit smoothies do not help in that department.
Tofu can be blended into such a creamy consistency, if you like having a blender and ever wanted one that could actually blend things perfectly? Get the vitamix. Its not a splurge but an investment!
Well, I did it! I feel relieved...lol. It's is nice that this site has the free shipping code. I hope the Vitamix meets my expectations. Thanks for everyone who replied.

I know you've already bought the thing, but I just wanted to add my two cents:
I use my Vitamix Super 5000 nearly every day. I mix smoothies, sauces, dips, desserts, just about anything. I got it as a wedding present, but it's so awesome, I might have married the Vitamix, too (if that were allowed in this state).
My uncle bought a Vitamix at a yard sale. The motor went bad after five more years of use, and he called the company, and they replaced it, even though he wasn't the original owner. Yeah, they are that awesome.

i am really considering a vitamix right now even though i am a huge saver as well. reasons being: juices! it does that, right?, smoothies! right now i use my roomies magic bullet but when she is gone in a year i am out of luck, i use my food proccessor all the time but i hate cleaning it...

NO! It soooo easy! It's one of the HUGE pluses!
You put in 5 cups on water (warm if you like) and 2 drops of dishsoap (literally 2 drops, don't use more! ;)) and run it. That's IT!
There is no assembly to take apart and clean it's all one piece.
Every once in awhile I wipe off the outside well.
The only thing that I've had to clean twice was if i made hummus with lots of oil, or nut butters. And then I just do the above twice in a row.
Does it also slice things like a food processor or is it in addition to a food processor? Can you make juice with it? Or is it more like a really good blender?

Basically, the vitamix makes whole food juice or smoothies which use the nutrient-rich pulp, also, rather than extracted juice which separates and discards the pulp.

I've juiced with it but sometimes the juice needs to be strained. Or you have to cut out the core of the apple or something.
It doesn't slice like a food processor.
It will chop and shred. There are ways and methods to do this and it does take time to learn.
If you're making a salsa you literally flip the switch on and off and it's done more and it's MUSH or salsa soup.

DH and I were just saying that it's one of the more expensive purchases that we've made that we don't regret AT ALL.

I was giving my mom a raw soup recipe and mentioned the Vitamix and how I wanted one. She said she would get it for me for Christmas!!!!
My question is: for people who have the dry mixer, how often do you use it and what do you use it for? I don't generally eat anything with flour in it, so if it's just for flour, I would get the cheaper package with no dry mixer.
How long do they live? I, too, am on the fence...
Yeah, I second the request for informed opinions about the different levels of vitamixhood... any reason not to get the cheapest package?
