If You Could Only Have ONE Appliance!

HI!

If you could only have ONE appliance what would YOU pick???

I am new to vegetarianism and only have a Cuisanart blender.I would like to start creating more of my vegetable based meals.  I have heard a lot of people say they can't live without their VITAMIX. But do you still need a food processor if you have a Vitamix?  I'mreally interested in sneaking more leafy greens in my smoothies and juicing with greens, too. If you could only pick one appliance.....what would it be?

Thanks ahead of time for your input. Bring it on!

Susan

I would say my food processor.  I wish I had a vitamix...maybe one day....

does a pressure cooker count as an appliance? if it does, than that. most definitely i could not live without all my beans.

either a food processor or an immersion blender. i have both, both cuisinart, most excellent.

from what i hear, vitamix does a better job at certain tasks than a food processor, either by the shape/design or the power. for instant, nuts in a food processor might be an uneven texture (nut butter on the edges, little chunks on top), but i know some people use vitamix especially for nut stuff. for my purposes, i'm happy with a "cheap" $100 food processor.

another appliance i have is a slow cooker. Honestly, not really an essential. It makes some good seitan and baked beans, but isn't too much of a time saver anyway (most soups/stews are going to sit on the stove without much intervention anyway, and recipes often call for sautéeing onion/garlic/etc first and then adding to the slow cooker).

My immersion blender, hands down!

I find that I use my Vitamix and food processor for different tasks.  I don't think they're interchangeable.  I've given it some consideration and if I lost everything, the only thing I'd prioritize before replacing my Vitamix is a refrigerator.  Vitamixes are hella expensive, though.  For smaller jobs (most of them), I use a Magic Bullet.  If you added greens to a smoothie and didn't get it perfectly smooth in a standard blender, you could drink it with a boba straw and it'd be fine.

honestly?  I've lived without a refrigerator (don't recommend it tho) but I'd have to say my toaster oven.

My immersion blender that comes with a chopper box. Use it all the time.

Magefesa is nice too. But definitely the chopper/blender.

So have I.  In SoCal, we don't have green grocers and everything is off a freeway, so it was a pain going to the store every couple of days to buy produce.  The lazy person in me likes weekly to bi-weekly grocery shopping trips.

I forgot to add:  If you already have a standard blender, I'd go with a food processor next.  Or look for an immersion blender with a chopper box.  That sounds brilliant.

I have a dual blender/food processor. It's a life saver--I wouldn't want to do without that. My food steamer would be after that--I love that thing so much! I shudder to think about only having one appliance though...think of all the food you wouldn't be able to have w/o all our gadgets!

It would have to be my food processor - I love it :)>>>

I have used a vintage Cuisinart for many years until the motor stopped working just recently.  Luckily, I had a back-up Cuisinart I found at a yard sale for $15.  It is barely used & has at least 10 attachments.  I use it all the time for shredding carrot & zucchini for quick breads.  Grinding nuts, making bread crumbs, dressings, etc.  I really think you could pick a nice one up on the cheap at a thrift store or yard sale.  I think a lot of people get them, never use them, & finally decide to get rid of them.

In my experience, a food processor is very versatile & can get the job done.  But...a blender would be really nice for liquids like soups, dressings, & smoothies.  Liquids tend to leak a bit from the processor (I also try to squeeze too much stuff in there) & can be hard to pour out.  I have never owned a blender that was not an infuriating piece of crap though.  I have decided to never purchase one again until I hit the lottery and can afford a Vitamix or one of its caliber. ;)

No SoCal apartments that I've lived in or know of came with refrigerators.  I lived with a small dorm-sized one for years because it was easier to move.  Now I have a full-sized one and love it.

Here if you buy a newly-built apartment, you have to do the entire bathroom and kitchen yourself, and pay extra. As in wall and floor t¡les, fittings etc. You are provided with 2 shells of rooms to do up yourself (ie pay to have done, by someone else than the builder).
Many rental apts don't provide fridges or washers because there for awhile when people moved out they would take the appliances too.

Thanks for all the input!!!  I never even knew what an immersion blender was and now it sounds like I need one.....ha!!!

Actually, I was really asking about small kitchen appliances... I'm trying to decied in I NEED a Vitamix or just have a bad case of the WANTS.

The main thing I think I would use it for would be soups and leafy green smoothies.

Fun to read all your replies and thanks for the input!!!!
