I'm going to a conference... Wish me luck!

My mom invited me to volunteer at a conference in Ottawa this week. I accepted - the city's awesome. I'm going for free as a volunteer and she won't be paying for my hotel because I'm 16 (wink wink). I've had some pretty bad experiences with catered food in the past so I'm bringing along enough for the week - that way I'll be ok if the food's a bust. But I hope it isn't, and I hope I have a great time. Ottawa is fairly veg-friendly, as far as I know, so maybe I'll find a little vegan haven!
Wish me luck in my travels ;)b
The luckiest person is the one who doesn't depend on luck for success. I checked Happy Cow for you:

There are 24 listings for Ottawa. 8) You can use mapquest to determine which ones are closest to your convention site.
Have fun!
Safe travels laurabs! What kind of conference is it and do you know what you'll be doing?

I like that. The luckiest person... Happy cow is a god-send. I already checked it out, but there aren't close veg restaurants to where I'm staying. I'll deal though - and maybe my mom and I can make a special trip to one... There are a few that look so good...

It's a conference about the Ontario poverty reduction campaign - there will be social service leaders, activists, and politicians meeting. My member of provincial parliament (back where I live when I'm at school - London, ON) is the chair of the Provincial Committee on Poverty Reduction and will be there as well (during the school year I volunteered at her office weekly, so I know her well). I'm really interested in the conference and know I'll learn a lot - I'm so excited!
Awesome! Are you going to help with set up and take down so you'll have a chance to hear some of the speakers, or will you be sequestered to a booth during the event?
yay have fun!
Yay! Have fun! That sounds like a cool conference.
I just got back from the Minnesota State Autism Conference and it was pretty good. Definitely good to get away and meet people who share at least some of your interests and ideas.
Blech for veg food, though. Pack some in your suitcase!
Although I was impressed that they did have all reusable cups, silverware, napkins, etc for the continental breakfast and mugs instead of paper cups for coffee.
Good luck and learn a lot!
Thanks everyone! I'm in my hotel room now, relaxing after a long drive to get here.

I'll atually be sittin gin on the sessions - taking minutes, etc. - so I'll be able to hear and see what's going on (that's actually my job, I'm an official observer).

If you have a chance to make it to a veg restaurant, I HIGHLY recommend the Green Door...sooo good. Not a lot of seating space though, and it fills up fast, so get there early if you can!
Oh my goodness, so full... so full...
I convinced my mom to take me out to a veggie restaurant (called The Table), and man oh man. I'm not used to having so much vegan food available (and it was buffet style!!!) - what sent me into a tailspin (in a good way) was the selection of vegan desserts! We got our desserts to go and brought them back to the hotel - chocolate raspberry cake, pumpkin pie, fudge pudding, carob chip cookies, carrot cake, raw brownies... all vegan! I have some sitting in the hotel room mini fridge, but I ate most - SO GOOD. I think the chocolate cake was my favourite.
I'm just so stuffed. Definitely not used to so many options... it was amazing.

i love that. that is the sign of a real vegan place--when it has tons of vegan dessert.
:D Yay! :hotforyou: I'm glad you're having a good time.
