it's really hard.

So i am trying to be a complete Vegan but my "redneck" step-dad eats meat all the time.
and i told my mom i wanted to be healthier and lose weight by cutting it out. i have for the most part but i can't completely.
it's really starting to annoy me.
i have no job and she won't buy me the foods i want to replace it. she will go out and spend $100 on meat each week but will only get one head of lettuce for 4 to share.
any suggestions on how i can have the diet without starving to death from not eating??
Don't be too hard on yourself. Take things one day at a time. Is your only motivation for going veg losing wieght? Try to think of some of the other benefits & discuss these issues with your mom. Zealia offered some good suggestions on your first thread.
Also, if you are serious about this & you are 19, you could get a parttime job to pay for some of your own food. Vegan food can be very inexpensive, but it would probably be difficult for your mom to see that. If she is already buying food for everyone else in the house, buying some thing "special " for you would seem to be more costly.
that isn't my only reason reason but it was one i pleaded with her. i think that it it disgusting the way they treat the poor animals and i really find no need for meat or other products. we have a pet pig and if they killed him to eat i would probably get sick all over it.
i've tried ot get a job and had no luck but i will keep searching.

Besides discussing animal rights, they also have a free vegitarian starter kit you can request and various literature that discusses the health benefits to a vegitarian diet. DO you grocery shop with your mom? It might help to go and point out that beans & tofu & whole grains are very cheap compared to meat. You'll have to learn how to cook for yourself too if you don't already.
I admire you for making the switch at a young age. It can be very difficult when you are not in full control of your own food.
dried beans and rice.
look and see is there is a CSA in your town that you can work at in exchange for fresh vegetables.
start talking about the way the animal was slaughtered at the dinner table (ok, that one was a joke >:D)
what kind of vegan foods do your parents keep around the house? if you tell us that maybe we can tell you what you can make out of it.
Help your mom with the grocery shopping and suggest food items that all of you can eat without mentioning it's veg*n. Something like this: "Hey mom, beans, we haven't had beans in ages! Oh, peanut butter, we really need that" or something like that. All the real food (barring dairy and eggs) is vegan. You take the grocery cart and head for the produce section first. Also take into consideration your family's income You should probably do this when your mom's not in a hurry. And don't make comments on the way the rest of the family eats-they will be misconstrued as rude. Hang in there and make do until you can contribute to the family income and have a say in groceries.

:-D That was great Hespedal!
I hate to tell you this but you may just have to wait until you can be in complete control over your diet, remember that your health is at stake and if youre not going to be able to supplement everything that you will need to as a vegan it will do you more harm than good. Its not impossible, but it will definitely depend on the amount of help your parents are willing to give. If you do try it, use the fitday journal to keep track of the nutrients you need.

;D My co-worker was eating tuna and I talked to him about how baby dolphins get caught in tuna nets and the mothers swim alongside their babies and sing to them as they both drown. He didn't finish his sandwich.

omg is that true? i knew about the dolphins and nets, but the moms singing to their babies? i'm totally crying in my office about this. :'( :'( :'( :'(
Me, too. There should be a warning "This might make you cry" and blank space like when you're discussing spoilers about your favorite tv shows!
I read an article somewhere about it. Baby dolphins make up a big chunk of the dolphins caught in nets. I don't know if it's true with all species, but an article I read described the mothers drowning with their babies while singing to them. It wasn't the main point of the article, just a passing description, but it reminded me of the movie Titanic where families in the locked in lower class rooms tucked their children into bed and prepared to drown with them.

You just did it again! :'( :'( :'(
wow.
umm...
that about the dolphins is sad.
and i do go with my mom and i mention thigs to her but she doesn't care.
i wanted bananas and she said something about them being to green ((THEY WEREN'T GREEN AT ALL))
but yeah maybe i will have to wait.
that sucks though cause i really don't want to.
but in a few months i will be all on my own and i can try.
the only non-animal products we have are green beans, peas((i don't eat peas)), rice, potatoes, she bought broccolli thatt went bad in 2 days, and that's about it.
so yeah....and i tried over the summer but it got way to repeditive.
does you family eat pasta or other veggies at all?? :o
have you asked exactly why your parents are so against you eating healtier? i cant believe that parents would be so against simply adding foods that feed their own children!!
if you see a doctor, maybe you could ask to get some bloodwork done and see a nutritionist, if you get the medical world on your side, perhaps your parents would take you more seriously. surely a diet of only potatoes and green beans wouldnt be supported by a nutritionist.
i think your best bet would be to get a job, even just doing some odd jobs, babysitting, chores for them or neighbors? just to get some cash. the summer may bring around more options, hiring is usually up in the summer months. you could do some simple gardening too, if you have the space/knowledge.
well.
my step-dad only eats rice so no there isn't any pasta except on the rare occasion that my mom makes spaghetti.
if i found some macaroni that has "fake" cheese could it work with soy milk??
yes, that would work...I recommend roads end organics...
I thought you dad was a chef?

what?? i never said that...he is a redneck...all he eats is meat...GROSS!!!
Hi Emmie. If you can get your hands on a book called The China Study by T. Colin Campbell, it is chock-full of all the health reasons why animal products are horrible for us. Maybe you could read it and then be able to share some of the reasons why you are passionate about not putting it into your body (besides the fact that it is killing sentient, loving beings).

"The China Study: The Most Comprehensive Study of Nutrition Ever Conducted" by T. Colin Campbell
Maybe you could even get your Mom to read it. :-\
Also, there is a GREAT documentary movie out that explains many of the same health issues due to eating animal products and processed foods, which may be easier to get the information across for people who don't like to read:

Good luck and hang in there even if you have to wait to become full vegan until you get out of the house!
