Job question(s) Part 2

Today I have an interview for what I hope to be a second job. The thing is, I only have one refernce; do you think it matters? Plus do any of you know if employers are turned off by people who are looking for a second job?
Also, should I let them contact my current employer or not? I want to say no because its Wal Mart and they love to fire people there, especially since its time for a bonus. But I don't want to do anything that will hurt my chances with getting another job.

I desperately need the money of two jobs and I just hope I don't blow the interview. It supposedly pays $15 an hour for some customer service stuff.

They say it's easier to get a job when you already have one. As for references, things are prob. different here but no one has ever asked me for a reference. It would depend on the type of work I suppose...I don't think the local shop or whatever will be as picky as say, a university.

I don't think they really need to know what your other job is...in the US I've heard they can't even ask you for a photo on your resume as it would be discrimination. (They still ask for them here, in fact locally if you don't put a photo on your resume it goes straight in the bin.)

If the new company is concerned that you already have a job, what they are really worried about is if you will be able to handle both jobs. If it comes up in the interview, assure them that you will be able to give 100% while you are on their time clock.

They "require" a photo?! This floored me!! You're right, in the US they can't ask for photo, height, weight, marital status, pregnancy, or sexual orientation. (I'm sure there's more no-no's.)

i have only had a couple of employers that have actually called my references. especially if it is somewhere like wal-mart... doesn't seem to likely, but it's possible.

they don't have to know you want this as a second job, if the hours don't clash they don't have to know, honestly. if you say you are already employed they usually assume you are planning on quitting your other job. Also, the reason they have it as an option to not contact your current boss as a reference is because some people don't want their employers to know they are getting a new job/looking for a second.

give the 1-800 number walmart human resources.  they can verify your employment status that way.  walmart isn't allowed to say anything good or bad anyway, just that you do work there, and how long you have worked for them

Okay, now I"m freaking out about the drive there. I have the directions and plenty of gas, but now my stomach is doing flip flops. I'm also nervous about the interview now that I have to leave to drive there in a few minutes even though the appointment is at 3:00 to allow for freak out time.

Here's to not blowing it....

Okay, so I just googled the company I was just hired into and it turns out they love to screw people over. Apparently they require you to pay $150 for a sample kit of knives to demonstrate to clients how they work. I was told this was a choice and I can't remember the other option he gave, but I know there was one.

Second, the weekly meetings were mandatory and he made it sound like we could have meetings over the phone.

Unpaid training

I was told they would book appointments for us and that we could just pick up however many we wanted, but from what I gather online, we have to go out and get our own clients.

So,yeah... NOT YAY. >:(

EDIT: Also, there are also several anti-Vector Marketing groups, a petition with over 7,000 signatures to stop them and they even admitted fraud two seperate times!

Why didn't I know about this before? And why do I always find the scammers?

No honest corp asks YOU for money when they give you a job: not for a packet, not for anything. This is what put me off MK in college, you have to pay for the "starter kit." No, thank you.

Better luck in something honest.

ugh that sucks.  I had a friend who did something like that, selling knives, but I think he did it for a commission, and it seemed pretty hard.  Do you have any experience or interest in working with children? I was a special education aide for 3 years and I didn't need a degree or anything to do it. It paid decently and it was really interesting, though it was also one of those jobs that kind of consumes your thoughts because you're always thinking about the students... anyway, just a suggestion.  good luck finding something that's interesting, pays well, and isn't a scam! :)

I've decided to not go with it. I don't want to take any chances. Thank all of you for your words. I don't know what I'd do without y'all sometimes.

ALGAE: It seems like every job here dealing with kids requires experience and some sort of degree. I have neither, so I can't even be a nanny.
