Lobster help please

Hello all. This is an interesting way I came across your site, please bare with me and don't laugh too hard! lol I am in fact not a vegetarian or a vegan. (I hope you all won't hold that against me as I am here to learn and not harass). I was watching a re-run of Wife Swap and one of the ladies was a vegan. She was speaking on her beliefs and why she chose her lifestyle and made mention that lobsters actually hold hands! I was so interested in this I did an internet search for "do lobsters hold hands". I came across a thread from your forum here about it and apparently according to a few of your members, it is true! I saw one person mention they had taken underwater photos of this, and was wondering if anyone had pictures, or a link of this. I cannot find that thread again for some reason to see the members name! =( What a wonderful thing to see something that sweet! I hate walking into Red Lobster and seeing all the poor lobsters on display with their banded claws. I always told my husband if we ever came into some money, I would go into one and buy them all up and liberate them. I know it's only one tank, but I still think it would make me feel good! =) What an awful death they must endure! Geez! So, if anyone has any information or pictures of the lovey-dovey lobsters, that would be awesome! Thank you! =)

nobody try to google "lobsters holding hands."

not unless you want to see baked lobster on a plate with a side of butter.  :-\

Thought I'd save everyone the trouble...

Also, OP, I hope you live near an ocean if you actually plan on liberating those lobsters.  It won't do any good to set them free in fresh water.

*tee hee hee* this totally reminds me of the friends episode where Phobe tells Ross that Rachel is his "lobster" because, accoding to phobe, lobsters mate for life and walk around in their tanks holding claws. Then she mimes the claw holding. Ross attempts to tell Rachel this but just doesn't get it. *awww* such a sweet sentiment--I'm looking for my lobster too *lol*

I just googled it and I only found 1 site that had information about lobsters, like mating, etc.  It didnt mention anything about holding hands (or claws), but it also said that once they mate, the female leaves the male's shelter never to return (in the wild).  They are not monogamous, so I cant see them holding hands on purpose if all they do is stay in the same shelter for a few days and leave forever...

It's all I could find, hope this helps!

I scuba dive and yes, I have seen lobsters hold hands.  I have seen lobsters walk across the sand holding hands.  I have seen lobsters terrified when we look into their cubby holes, many holding hands, all the while waving their antenae at us.  Of course, as divers, we are taught to respect all the sea critters and we just look or take pictures.  But yes, lobsters hold hands.  Lobsters can live a very long time.  I think it is 50 to 70 years or longer.

I have peaked in hidey holes and seen 6 to 8 lobsters clumped together, some holding hands if you can call them hands.

I have also seen a young man in Roatan, Honduras in a chamber because he was a lobster diver for Red Lobster.  They do not pay by the hour, they pay by the lobster.  So these poor people dive without computers, go too deep and too long and do not follow or know the laws of diving (as in safety).  The young man was 19 and will never walk again.  He was the sole supporter of his family.  Dad, DEAD...lobster diver for Red Lobster.

As the lobsters are decimated, the divers have to go deeper to find them.  All they can think of is feeding their families.

I said to a wonderful lady in Roatan how sad I was for the young man.  She said, you will never see an old lobster diver here.  When I asked why, she said they were all dead.

I guess corporate American couldn't give a shit of the people who will never walk again or die, as long as they can serve their overweight, grossly indulgent US population.

One of the busiest re compression chambers is in Roatan.  One of the group of people that largely use it is the lobster divers and one of their biggest employers, Red Lobster.  May they rot in hell!

P.S.  I spent a month in Roatan.  Watching that poor young man struggle to walk again was heartbreaking.  His family now has no older male to provide for the family as his dad is a dead lobster diver. He is a incapacitated lobster diver.  They go out in boats and keep having their tanks filled.  No safety stops.  No computer to warn them of decompression.

When I was there, there was a firefighter from the US who goes down yearly to train people on diving safety.  I made a comment on how horrible it was that the young man was in the chamber.  He looked at me and said, you think of that every time you eat at Red Lobster.  I said, I am a vegetarian and don't eat lobster and when I wasn't a vegetarian, I didn't eat lobster.  He apologized.

OK, I am done.  Happy New Year everyone!

Oh, and studies have been done and lobsters do feel pain when you boil them alive.  The cute Aussie chef, can't think of his name cooked lobster one night and said to be kind, to put them in the freezer first where they will fall asleep before you boil them alive.

Lobsters are even mentioned in the Bible for being creatures "who though they have no king, march in armies." They do move in columns across the sea floor...and guess what? They set "sentries" to protect those columns--and relieve each other regularly! They have very good discipline and defend each other when they're in groups.

If Solomon mentioned this in the year dot, I bet a lot of people knew it. I think it's somewhere in Proverbs, though they don't use the word "lobsters" I think.

hummm...thats fascinating...I didn't know Lobsters did all that...thats is especially cool about the sentries and the shifts they do...

I'm trying to think of the verse you are talking about...all i can think of is a similar one about locust and ants....

Lobsters can live a very long time.  I think it is 50 to 70 years or longer.

I have heard that lobsters are much like giant tortoises in that, as far as we know, they don't die of old age, and in fact, continue to grow their whole lives. Potentially, there could be a HUGE hundreds-of-years-old lobster at the bottom of the ocean somewhere.

This is great information, thank you for sharing!! I am a vegetarian and like lobsters for the animal they are. They are so misunderstood.

You and I are very much alike! I have heard about that too, they are very unique creatures. I admit I like to eat at Red Lobster basically just for their cheddar bay biscuits but I am very disturbed by the tank up front and to know their fate. It is such a shame that most people have no problem with eating them as well as other animals. When I visit, I never leave without leaving 'my mark' in the restroom.. I leave 1 or 2 stickers that say, "Being Boiled Hurts". Just like you, I would *love* to liberate them and save them from suffering!!
