Looking for cruelty-free hair dye..

What do you guys use?
I tried henna a few weeks ago and it didn't do much. I want to go darker. Everything I have found has a ton of chemicals in it and is tested on animals, eww.

Manic Panic doesn't test on animals, or have animal products.

manic panic works ..ok. it does fade fast and be sure that you rinse your hair until the water runs clear!!!

i didn't once and my neck, face ,upper back and arms/hands turned blue. if you want a longer lasting dye i'd suggest the amplified formula or special effects. what color do you want to dye your hair??

i dunno.. i was thinking of making all of it lighter (blond ish or white..i havent decided) and then putting some color in. at first i was thinking magenta because i know an ok brand for that (like it lasts a while) but since manic panic is vegan and has a ton of colors, i might do that. how much longer does the amplified kind last? and what colors last the longest?

I know you said you've tried henna, but have you checked out the Henna for Hair website?  http://www.hennaforhair.com/

I've not died my full head with henna, but have been considering it and thus reading up on the topic and have even practiced with some differnt combos on my own hair "samples"-strands from the hairbrush, etc.  From what I understand, if you already have darker hair to begin with, plain henna will do nothing for you, except maybe make you red if you are light enough to start.  You'd need to blend the henna with indigo to go darker, or dye with henna first, then follow with indigo if you wanted to go jet black.  Check it out, I wouldn't write off henna yet, as it is all natural and very healthy for your hair from what I understand.

if it's really bleached first it will grab the color better.  I work with a bunch of hairstylist so I learn all this stuff secondhand.

I've always used special effects.  it rocks.  The first time I ever tried to dye my hair was with manic panic and it turned out pink instead of red.  Definitely bleach it first (unless you just want a tint).  As far as special effects goes, I've used green, nuclear red (orangish red), blood red (red red), yellow, blue, and orange.  the bottles say not tested on animals.

how long the color lasts depends on how long you leave it on, how much you use and the shade.
darker colors like blues, purples, some greens, pinks and reds last the longest.in general, if you bleach your hair first the amplified color could last any where from 2 weeks to a few months longer than the regular dye.
