I'm trying to wrap my head around this. I've looked it up on Wikipedia, but I'm still a little confused. ???
Why am I curious? Well, I'm applying for a summer job (for students) that focuses on the internet, new media, social networking etc. I want to UNDERSTAND all this stuff - I'm good with Facebook, pretty familiar with MySpace (although haven't used my profile in ages), have read and subscribe to some blogs but don't know how to make my own, and haven't even tried podcasts, RSS feeds, or things like flickr.
I know my fellow vegwebbers have a better grasp on this than I do. I just want a basic, plain English understanding of web 2.0. Help!
hm... the only time i've heard that is on cell phones. like Verizon Wireless phones have access to mobile web 2.0
Here is a link to a tech-y definition of what web 2.0 means to the IT world. I think it is a buzz word that many people use to sound like they know what the hell they are talking about....its confusing. As long as you are not planning to develop web applications, don't worry about it. For the description you gave of your job opportunity,I would say as long as you are familiar with current internet trends; blogs, wikis, rss, networking sites, etc...you should be fine.
Web 2.0 is also used to describe look and feel in the web design world....personally I think it looks like super-glossy cookie-cutter crap...but that's just me. ;) Maybe someone else can define it better.
Thanks, VS. That's what I thought, but then what do I know?
I guess to sum it up better and make it more confusing... ;D...Web 2.0 means different things to different people. Developers vs. designers use it differently, and in your case I think the intended meaning was that of being current with what is going on with the internet right now as opposed to 2002.
It IS confusing, but thank you VS! I think you're right about just being knowledgeable on internet trends for this job - Facebook, blogs, etc. Thanks again!
Now I'm trying to wrap my head around HTML. I don't get this stuff!
The expression web 2.0 is mostly used to describe this "new" trend in the world wide web in which the users of the Net are its main actors. With the popularity of social networks, blogs, podcasts, there is a democratisation of the Web, whereas before, the managing of pages was left to the webpage designers, the "expert" per se, now, anybody can add information and is an expert in his own right.
That's how I see it.
