Play God! Make a Decision for Me!
Hi Everyone!
I need your help! There is a race coming up on August 17, I have the option to either run a 5k or a 10k. I have run one of each race in the past two months and am really excited to do another--I'm just not sure which one. I know I can run a 5k very easily--it's part of my daily workout to run one, so I am overly confident of not only finishing, but be able to beat my last 5k race time--which would be awesome. On the other hand, the 10k would provide an awesome challenge, however, due to some recent physical issues I may not be able to run the whole thing, and as this is a TAC certified race, waling in not allowed and I would be disqualifed if I slowed to a walking pace :( if it were not for that fact I would immedaietly sign up for the 10k--but without that safety net--I'm kind of afriad of the challenge.
So what do you all think? Should I go with the race I am overly confident about or the race I am not confident about at all??
You decide! Voting will commence for 1 day!
Wow Capture, that's a hard one. Reminiscing on my days of running from dinosaurs back in the Cretaceous ;), I think I would have opted for the 10k, even if failing to finish was a possibility....just for the challenge. That being said, if your physical issues = injury, you don't want to exacerbate the problem and perhaps a shorter race would be more appropriate. I didn't help much, did I? :-\
And just in case anyone plans to call me on it: yes, I know humans and dinosaurs didn't share the planet at the same time.
I think I would do the 5K. You don't want to think of yourself as a failure if you can't finish it.
BUt then what am I saying.....I couldn't run it even if it was 1000 feet. I hate running! ;D
what are your recent physical issues? you can email me if you dont want it on the board
I would go for the 5K until the physical problems are resolved. No point in making the injury worse and risking your chances or not being able to run at all.
I'm with biodancer on this. However awesome it is to push your limits and do something really challenging, don't risk your health and feel like you've failed. Go for the 5k and work up to the next one when your health issues are resolved :)

But if you don't make the attempt at the 10k, will you think of yourself as a wuss? I guess there really is no easy answer, but I do agree with the others, if you are suffering from an injury that could be worsened by the run, do the shorter one. I still voted for 10k, but only if you're not hurt. Your health is the most important thing.
And remember, just the fact that you're competing makes you a winner. Not a failure or a wuss, no matter what the outcome!
I voted for the 10K before I read your post. I guess whether you can do the 10K or not depends on your medical issues. But I am one who likes a challenge, and likes to push myself.
One time I rode a 62 mile bike ride. I thought it would be hard, and was nervous that I wouldn't be able to do it, but I had ridden 40 to 50 mile bikerides. Turns out, 62 miles was no big deal, it was no problem at all. It helped that it rained at the beginning of the ride. I wish I would have done 100 miles now.
Challenge yourself...if you are able to. Challenge is what keeps life interesting.
I vote for the 5K. Why? Because shorter distances can still be challenging, it all depends on the pace.
10 K challenge = finishing
5 K challenge = time
I couldn't vote, because I don't think the 5K would be unchallenging. But I LOVE to play God. Thank you.
You also have to keep it fun, for the long term. It will be hard enough to keep up running once the weather changes, I think with continually improving times you'd have more motivation. There is also no way that not doing the 10k would be the "easy way out" with everything you do and like HH said, you can still make the 5 k super challenging. If there is an injury, remember you are doing this for the long term and there will be years and years of 10ks coming (if that's what you want), there is no need to push everything now. Pushing an injury could jeopardize all present and future goals. Whatever you decide, I'm excited to see more happy race pics and hear about your next milestone. I'm so happy for you and everything you've accomplished lately. BTW... I'm still running (short and slowly), and am seriously thinking about going to Playmakers to have them fit me for (expensive) shoes like you suggested.
Skip them both, sounds like you're training too hard.
You'll be faster and stronger in the long run :)>>>
You've got forever to build up to a 10K. Give your body time to heal, especially if you're still finding the 5ks to be FUN. And as everyone else said, there are new challenges to be had in the 5K (e.g., time)
One of my goals is to do a run like that in the next year. We have so many great runs around my area. (One of the premiere 4-mile runs in the country runs right out front of my apartment!)
The best improvements I see in my running always come after giving myself a nice long break.
August 17th is about 3 1/2 weeks away, will your injuries be better by then? Will you be able to heal your body and get strong, ie:eat well and make your current workouts worthwhile and not be to weak? Maybe trying for the 10K will give you the permission you need to eat more calories and get healthy-if you do this than I vote for the 10K becouse once school starts you may not be able to do another race for awhile. If you don't think you are up to it than definately go for the 5K and have fun and improve on your time.
Skip them both, sounds like you're training too hard.

Can I change my vote?
Not running could actually work for your emanicpation proclamation. You don't have to do everything.

omg, get out of my head!!!
I'm all about pushing myself to the next level. Go for the 10k! Life is too short not to :)
Hey Everyone!
Wow! I really did not expect so many people to weigh in on this--I expected to check the board and see this at the very bottom--so thank you all for helping me make this decision!
I guess I should clarify the physical issue--I am not injured--my ankles and legs are in good shape and my lungs are pretty strong--my problem is a general weakness from some ED issues I've been dealing with. I'm concerned that if I do go out for the 10k I might be too weak or over exert myself to the point of passing out or something along those lines. I'm not sure if I'll be "better" in 3 1/2 weeks and there is a small possibliltiy that I could actually be worse as I am not in full control of the problem yet (but I am working really, really hard on it!) I am also a little concerned that training for this could trigger another round of ED complications too...I'm really, really hoping not though!
OK! Let's all think positive and productive now :) thanks again for all your help and support!!! Voting stays open till tomorrow morning :)

You should take a break. Try and gain control over your ED, get in a better place physically, mentally, and emotionally, and then do a race. There will always be races.
I agree w/ pink. You really need to focus on yourself right now and let the world do it's own thing for awhile. Trust me when I say it will still be there when you are ready to venture forth once again. As others have said, there will be other races, but summer berries and veggies are only fresh this time of year! Hmmm....decisions decisions

If you think this might act as a trigger AT ALL, then I change my vote. Give yourself time off.
