Reasons to be excited!!!!!

ok, not like we really need another 'reasons to...' thread, but a couple of times recently I had a reason to be excited, not necessarily reason to smile and so maybe other people do too!
My RTBE: I just bought my very first car!!!!! I get to pick it up next week, so have a little while before I get to drive it but yay!!
i'm back to being vegan again and it feels really nice :)
I hope to remain vegan while in school, even if I have to eat salad every day again.
I didn't even know you stopped!
I very briefly did. I was still mostly vegan, but I did eat things in our dining hall when there were no other options. it's tough because sometimes our dining hall isn't even vegetarian friendly, which is weird because we have a TON of vegetarians.
I was having a tough time for the majority of the semester because they'd have things labeled "vegan," yet they'd contain fish, "bacon grease," et cetera, so finally I emailed the manager (at the end of the year, because I'm a dumbass) and she told me that the food WAS vegan, but they couldn't change the allergen information on the bottom because Sodexo owns copyright, blah blah blah.
I got really upset because one day they had beans and rice in the vegetarian section, and without checking, I ate some. I went back to it later only to read that it contained bacon grease. I was disgusted.
I was still a vegetarian, of course!

I've had LOTS of problems with college dining halls and vegan food. When a college says that they are vegan friendly, they mean that they have a salad bar with a few vegan ingredients (mostly meat and cheese options) that have been sitting around for days. YUMMMMMMMMMMMMM!!!!!!!!!!! Then they will tell you to talk to the food manager/chef/person in charge of food and they will tell you what is already vegan and talk to you about adding vegan food to the dining hall. So you go on a tour of the cafeteria and the manager tells you about how their plain white rice, iceburgh lettuce and potato chips are vegan and voila! Instant vegan options! Then they tell you that they want to work out adding more vegan options and you get excited and they seem all on board and then you never ever see those options put into place. You write many 'How Are We Doing' cards complaining, all of which go unanswered or get the same answers.
Buying things like McDougall cups, etc are your best bet but lots of colleges don't have kitchens, allow microwaves, hot plates, coffee makers, anything that gets hot, etc. so sometimes that doesn't even work out.
The best thing to do is to really approach them with all of your balls presented. Tell them that you do not (or will not) pay for the meal plan if they do not have adequate food available that is able to sustain and nourish you on a daily basis and by law, if they require you to have a meal plan that they have to provide you food. If you can, get an adult to call them and tell them the same thing and act as a representative/advocate for you.
I contacted the dining hall at my school when I first transferred there, and stuff actually happened ;)b There were vegetarian options, but things weren't consistently labeled, and there wasn't a way to know if something was vegan vs vegetarian. Also there were sometimes error with labeling vegetarian things (like stuff made with chicken stock), and the staff didn't seem to know what "vegan" entailed (but many made it like they did... sigh... just say "i don't know," peoples).
After contacting them, I talked to the chef dude about vegan stuff. Occasionally, after then, I'd have to email them because something would slip (sometimes the people who wrote the menu boards would stop doing labels, or would revert from having "v" mean "vegan" to "vegetarian", which only became obvious when there was something like cauliflower with cheese sauce labeled 'v'). But generally things worked out pretty well.
I gave the chef a compilation of (mostly vegweb!) recipes initially, stuff that I figured would be easy to make with the ingredients they could get, en masse, and would be edible to the non-vegan crowd. Many of the recipes became regular dishes! The chef would sometimes be all "fb! I made that chana masala today! It's great!" (k, he didn't call me fb). Anyway, things were always awesomer when I spoke to the chef as opposed to the manager. He & the other cooks were more than willing to change things up for veganness and get the whole cross-contamination allergen thing, whereas manager dudes were always busy running the business aspect of the place.
So agreed on being ballsy, but being (or feigning to be) nice goes a long way. It was a bit of a stretch for me, but being smiley and upbeat about it got me further with that dining commons & my previous school's versus what other unhappy students did.
I did that at a conference, fb. The vegan option was a plate with a few steamed veggies. I amiably talked to the head chef about vegan options he could make that were time-efficient, with what he likely had on hand, and would have cross-over appeal. I didn't think about it after that because the conference was only three days. The next year, the vegan option was an awesome meal envied by omnis. In the case of food service, I think a head chef would appreciate a collaborative approach.

This is awesome. ;D And a very good way to approach many situations. I need to learn to get mah balls out sometimes. ;D

In life, it's always best to go balls forward!

Heli, if you can find a copy of the book (not the movie, which reeks) "Fried Green Tomatoes at the Whistle Stop Cafe" by Fanny Flagg, she adresses this and you would find it hysterical. She talks about wanting to have some balls in a box that she could bring out and bang the box on the table at meetings to get her way.
I shall look it up. I like the movie, but I bet I'd like the book more. :)
My RTBE: Depression--I haz kicked its azzzz. I was standing in my kitchen and realised I felt truly, madly, deeply unreasonably happy. And I hadn't had anything to drink and I wasn't high. I just feel better than I have for about 3 years. Or possibly more.
