Simple Pleasures

I just wanted to share this little critter I found in my garden today.  Isn't he/she tiny and cool?

Cute little guy...Love it... :)
I know my 3 year old daughter would kill at first sight while pulling her hair out and running and saying: You are all evil, you are evil! Aaaah!
My 7 older son and I are always trying to show her bugs and how cute their eyes are, etc... :-\
She runs in the house and goes completely bananas. She is so dramatic. :-[

Well, I can't say I'm completely in love with bugs.  Last night, out on my mom's deck, a huge moth landed on my chest, and I started screaming "Get it off!  Get it off!" while doing the "I have the willies" dance.

I like bugs a lot.  I like reading about them and I like watching them.  Their biological diversity is simply amazing.  I don't really like them on my body, though.  That being said, I don't freak out.  Usually I  tell them very sternly to "get off of me!" of "leave me alone!"  I say this the same way I would talk to my little brothers when I was a kid--habit, I guess.  Strangely, this method doesn't really work for bugs like it does for little brothers ;)

Beautiful pictures, BTW.

Hey do you have a source for the grammar thing?

I thought "mantid" or "praying mantids" referred to the family Mantidae and "mantis" is a genus (one of eight).  So, all of them are mantids, but only the ones in the genus Mantis are, well, "praying mantis."

I took entomology so long ago I could have just embarrassed myself.

The most valuable lesson I ever learned about animals was from my grandmother: If you don't bother it, it won't bother you. It's more afraid of you, than you are of it. Now, that does not always hold for agressive dogs etc. but certainly for bugs...if they percieve us we are usually so big they don't want to engage. My sister used to drive me nuts, she was such a drama queen--I can understand being afraid of say wasps or hornets (esp since an extreme anaphylactic (sp?) reaction to the stings runs in our family), but she used to scream blue murder at the sight of a grasshopper! OK, so we grew em big in Iowa, but hey, what's it gonna do besides spit "tobacco juice"? And then only if you hassle it! I think she just enjoyed the running and screaming!
Me with spiders, now--anyone who sees my reaction knows it's a very real phobia...because in less than a second I am drenched with sweat and shaking like a leaf, I don't have the energy to scream!! But that was because the roof of our carport was invaded by a huge colony of spiders one year when I was very small...the cieling was literally Covered with webs and there must have been literally dozens if not hundreds up there. My father being the lazy brute he was just said, "They'll freeze this winter" and left them to it. Horrifying for a toddler, which I was then.

Thanks for sharing the pics,  there are so many beautful little critters in this world and it's always nice to spot something you haven't seen before.  I' ve noticed so many wonderfully coloured insects this year, but do have a problem with SLUGS......I have been rounding them up and taking them out for a walk to some other nice grub in the wild, but there's too many!!!!!! :(

What a wonderful "miniature"! I like it! I hope it's a gentleman mantid, though (grammar lesson: one mantid, two mantis). I have trouble relating to the lady mantid...something about eating your mate after you've finished with him just doesn't seem polite, where I come from!  :D

That may help explain why Mr. Mantid prays so devoutly!  ;)

A new one on me! What's a Snakefly? He is kinda cute.

I've never heard of a Snakefly either. It looks sort of like a dinosaur to me--a Dinosaurfly. I couldn't tell how big he is, though.  :-\

This one is about 1 inch (2.54 cm) long, tip to tip.  It’s a female.  That long thing sticking off the back is an ovipositor that helps her lay her eggs.  The snakefly can run backwards at full speed, which isn’t all that common.  They’re really cool!

I stand corrected. She is really cute. Her name must be Ginger...you know, she can do it all backwards, in heels!

apstaats,

I like him!  Cute little guy.  I wish I had a good camera,  I was at the horse barn today and the horse on the end stall, has some bird buddies.  (Barn swallows) They have built a nest right above him and recently have made a second nest as well.  When I was in taking care of him today I noticed 5 little barn swallow faces peeking over the edge of the nest watching me!  Would have made for a great picture!!  Mom and dad were circling the whole time I was in there working!  Cute little guys!

Aww, I'd love to see a picture of them!  Do you have a camera at all?  Mine's not a good camera by any means, and I was able to get decent pics...

BTW, welcome to the board!  :)

Thx for the welcome!  I have a camera I could probably use, (my daughters) not sure how to load pics on here but I have to go out there tomorrow.  I will see if I can get the camera and catch them "peeking"  Will go from there!  It was sooooooo cute!

Cool little critter. One thing is for sure though, he's NOT a vegan!

From Wikipedia:

"Being a carnivorous insect, the mantis feeds primarily on other insects. However, it is not uncommon for larger mantids to consume small reptiles and even small mammals or birds."
