What Percentage of the World is Made up of Vegans?

It seems that our company of fellow Vegans is growing quite steady. I just had a Vegan Fast Food restaurant open up down the road from me!!!
So I keep wondering "How many are We?"
I also was curious how many members were on Vegweb???

i've heard 1% ish?
also, i have asked yvette how many people are on vegweb and it was a TON! can't remember how many, though.

I doubt there are many who are strictly vegan, but I think the number of "variant" diets is rising - vegetarian, pescatarian, pescatarian without dairy or eggs, almost vegan, non-red meat eaters,  locavores, etc.

locavores

??? does this just mean they eat locally?

Yep.

Are we counting people in Africa who can't afford anything except vegetable oil and salt?

Here's an article from VT about USA vegetarianism.  http://www.vegetariantimes.com/features/archive_of_editorial/667

Worldwide stats would be itneresting to know, but might be skewed by the 100s of millions Indians in Asia that are vegetarian.

WAIT. It says percentage of the world...that counts countries such as India where the majority of people are vegan...America is a very small percentage of world population...Patrick said 25%, I said 20%.

Hmm. I kind of figured to be "vegan" you have to make a conscious decision about it. In the poll I didn't count the people who are vegan by default (that sounds pretty awful, but you know what I mean).

Well..I was speaking of those that are vegan b/c of Religion. I wouldn't really say that's "default"..I would think it would be a conscious thing... ???

Yeah, us weirdies who choose veg for no other reasons than imagination & ethics are in the minority, fer sure.  ???  I've noticed (from peeping at profiles) that a good percentage of VW vegans are atheist. Curious... *scratches head* For those religious folk (speaking of no one in particular) who think 'no religion = immorality'... well, hey, look at us nice ethical nonreligious vegans who choose not to harm or kill.

I do not mean to offend anyone or spark a discussion which would better suit the N&D board. I just find this, er, spiritual aspect... very interesting. Of course, any religion which encourages non-violence in all ways has gotta have something good going for it. God says go veg! w00t! (Goddess, in my case.  :P)

Depends on defined terms. I hear people talking that they went vegan... for a few days? Does this count? I try not to judge. But I do realize its hard for me to spend any quality time with junk food vegans. I might go as far to say I would rather spend and evening with a consciously healthy omnivore than a junk food beer swilling vegan.

This is all a very curious thing to me also...
haha...I guess I'll leave it at that!

I said 20% too thinking of all the veg*ns in India, Asia, ect. I think in the US it's only like 1%--but yeah--globally I would guess around 20%. Wouldn't it be great if it was more like 99%! Flip the numbers and free the feedlots!

OK, I'm confused.  An Indian friend of mine (who is vegetarian) said that while lots and lots of people in India are vegetarian, there are actually very few vegans.  I don't think the percentage could possibly be anywhere near 20% given that.

I think that is true...I think most Indians eat dairy (yogurt, paneer, raita) which would certainly not be vegan.

You ladies beat me to the punch.  Dairy is really popular in India.

Hm! Well, I was just going from what my acquaintance from India told me..but maybe there was a misunderstanding!  ??? Also, the Indian restaurant here (our only vegan option) is mostly vegan..but I guess since it's not ALL vegan..that doesn't really mean anything..
