ZOMG NVR but my snails just laid 100+ eggs
What am i going to do?! I've looked after these two snail for 6 freaking years and they've barely ever interacted! Now *poof* there's a huge egg clutch thing! 100+ eggs!!!! There's a small possiblilty the eggs aren't fertilized (therefore they wont hatch) . There's also a small possibility the eggs have drown and they will not hatch (the egg clutch fell into the water and they need to stay above water. They were only in the water for a miniscule amount of time....but it's still a possibility they've drown)
The kind of snail they are (Golden Apple), each organism has a definitive gender. I always assumed i had two snails of the same gender, see as how they never mated....now I need to separate them. They can lay multiple egg clutches a month! (200 snails a month? jeeze)
Now there is NO possibility I can cull the population. I could never ever ever do that, or let anyone else to do it for me...
I dont know what to do!!!

Where did you get your snails from? Is there a possibility you could contact the place for advice or ask if they will take the snails? Usually when a species has that many eggs it's because the mortality rate for those eggs are very high. Being they are in a safe environment it's possible you could end up with a lot of snails. If they hatch, check with local elementary schools, rescues, or environmental education centers to see if any of them would be interested in them for classroom education. Maybe even an aquarium, zoo, or pet store could help.
From an educational stand point it would be really neat to see them hatch and grow!
I had some fish for a while that would keep having babies. It was so cool!!!! I think some of the babies were eaten by the older fish & then the momma diedd, so no more babies, but I thought it was really neat. Try not to stress it. You can probably find homes for them if they all survive.
wow. i hated the snail problem when I had big fish tanks.
But I remember snails were good for something (eating the scum/waste?) but such a hassle.
Good luck!
Maybe it took them 6 years to feel comfortable enough with each other. ;)
I thought snails reproduced asexually? I had one snail one time and then afteer some time I had a tank full of snails. I will never put snails in my tank again! Good luck with that.
WOW! That's all I can say...WOW! Do you know what the odds are of viable snails coming from this many eggs? LIke if they lay 100 eggs X amount only ever hatch kind of thing? I'm just interested in the stats. I think it's sad you have to seperate them now :'( but it's easily understandable!
