Is this normal when cleansing?

Okay, SO last week I picked up a cleansing kit. I was going to get the really complete one but the lady at the vitamin store said that because it was my first cleanse she would recommend a colon cleanse (not to mention all eh compete detoxes were not vegan) She said she'd used the same brand and it worked for her. I read all the directions and started preparing myself to take it (cutting sugar, caffeine and flour) Ive been drinking maybe just a littel over 60 ozes of water a day...which is the minimum that the cleanse calls for.

Basically you are supposed to take four fiber pills int the morning AND and night...and then three laxatives in the evening. So today is my third day on the "cleanse" and I haven't had a single bowel movement..infact I almost feel constempated... (I'm a 1-3 time a day bowel mover.) I'm really mad...besides now, I feel fat and bloated..ha ha.The package says that it isn't a harsh stimulant laxative and from back in my days of *ahem* overusing laxatives I know that there are basically two types of laxatives, bulk laxatives and stimulant laxatives. The bulk ones are mainly just fiber, right? The stimulant ones are less natural and more likely to cause crampin. so i guess that means the "laxatives" are really just more fiber pills"? Dang it, have i been duped? Ams I juts taking 11 fiber pills a day?

so the question is...is this NORMAL? Should I keep at it a few more days and see how things "come out"  ;) (pun intended) GUYS!!! HELP!!!! check out the link.

Zealia - I used this brand about 6 months ago and I remember it taking a few days for things to "come out".  I was a meat eater then and figured that's why it took so long.  It did definitely start working though - it is rather mild (which I preferred).

Hang in there  ;)

My roommate notice a lack of bowel movements when we fast...and find it extremely weird because of the laxative teas we had to drink morning and night. At first there was no movement in the bowel area..until the 3rd and 4th days, then some weird shit happens man  :D
Every time we've done one of these fasts, my roommate ends up throwing up (we're not sure why I don't, but I think I'm just lucky), at which point you're supposed to stop.  And we're a team! Solidarity and weak will.

The kicker was that when we broke fast this time.....I uh....returned to "normal" quite quickly. I think the laxative teas were upset that they had nothing to smoothly move so they saved up their powers.  Smart teas

Because vegan's still eat flour, yeast, sugar etc. You're not just cleansing from meat and dairy.
Plus, supposedly if you ever ate meat you need to cleanse... it can rot and get stuck in your colon for a looooong time.

I forgot to mention Zealia,
I don't do a colon cleanse, it's an overall cleanse so maybe that's why mine flies out? ;)

i never quite understood the logic behind how a piece of meat could make it through you stomach and digestive acids...to end up lodged in your colon

but then again Im very skeptical

I didn't either adam, but if you do a cleanse and see the nasty gooey shiizzzit that comes out you go, "holy crap!" It's like snot strings... I mean there's a ton of nasty chemical we eat that must not be fully digested by our body... I almost go a "dip" at the store yesterday and it had ONE food product (whey) in it, the rest was chemicals! I didn't get it, but wow! Some people eat that stuff regularly and it's not even foooood! Not to mention what about if you swallow gum and stuff?
Sorry, I know you'd want the actual science on that though, I'll google it and stuff.
(I just said "and stuff" a lot in this post  ::))

Can you guys recommend a specific brand or method?  I think that most of the dairy is out of my system but who know's how long it lingers.  I have been interseted and I even researched a place that does colon cleansing but I would rather do it on my own private time than sit with a tube up, OK well you get it.

Jennifer's right...the first cleanse I did some unbelievable things happened down there and then two months later the same cleanse, not really anything...At first I thought I was doing something wrong, and then I realized I had nothing left to cleanse

i'm not sure if i believe the "food stuck in colon" stuff. i was interested in it (esp with the rumors like elvis had 40 pounds or whatever of poo in him when he died that was all "caked in" or whatever). i found a website and a doctor was saying that stuff doesn't stick in the colon like these ads claim. he talked about doing colonospopies on people of all diets and that they just don't see it. and that one would get toxic if they had waste in them too long "rotting" or whatever.

but i know not having regular poos can cause problems with the stuff "sitting around" too long.

I'm going to throw my hat in with the skeptics (i.e. baypuppy and adamcrisis)

If you are on a regular-ish diet, things just don't hang out in your colon, because fiber comes along and cleans it out.  If you have things stuck in there... you should see a gastroenterologist (I believe that's called fecal impaction... I hung out and worked with a gastroenterological surgeon for a couple months... learned a lot of fun stuff  ;D).

That nasty gooey stuff... is the mucus lining of your colon.  It's regularly regenerated... so if you keep "cleansing," you'll keep seeing it no matter what you're doing.  Some of it is naturally sloughed off with the rest of your poo, but you need some there to help things move along.  The mucus layer also keeps the luminal bacteria, which are definitely a necessary part of your digestive tract, from getting too close to the epithelial cells of your colon, and that's a good thing (Alexander Swidsinski et al., "Comparative study of the intestinal mucous barrier in normal and inflamed colon," Gut Vol. 56 (March, 2007).

Soo... it sounds like flushing the mucus layer out of your intestines increases the probability that you'll get sick, because you have nothing to protect the lining of your colon (no more mucus).  Then... you think you need another cleanse, 'cause you feel ill... or you just interpret it as your body getting rid of all the "toxins."

I gotta agree with all this. It makes sense that all that non-food stuff might wind up hanging around in there, but as one can tell from colonoscopies... it's pretty clean in there. I'm sure people do have toxins built up in their bodies, but I don't think evacuating your intestinal track will get rid of it, or all of it ('cause hey, there's stuff in your blood too!). I'm not sure if there's some study out there comparing people who do colon cleanses and those who don't and overall health/development of colon cancer/etc, but it sure would be interesting.

And... I've had some personal experience with this. I've never *purposely* done a cleanse, but last week... I had one of those "ORGANIC FOOD BARS" (yellow package) just to try it... and well, I do eat raw stuff but I guess my body just wasn't having any of the sprout/almond butter business in there. I experienced the (what I call) evacuation part, and I wound up feeling sick from everything I ate because, if you rush everything out of your system, your mucus and all that wonderful gut flora go with it too. Result? You can hardly digest ANYTHING (ok, I mean me). Those bacteria do a lot of the work for you... I wound up getting better after many many many soy yogurts (the only pro-biotic stuff I can get around here!).

BTW I'm going to PM you Zealia.

JH, I got your PM but I'm not a member so I cant reply.  :-\  Thank you for sending though, that was very insightful of you. My email is sillyzealy at yahoo dot com. If you send me an email then we can talk.  ;)

Otherwise...there has been some movement quite as much as normal and certainly not as much as I expected with all the talk about cleansing....I'm not sure what i think about the stuff staying in our systems for so long? i wanted to do  total cleanse, but...like I said, the lady didn't think it was a good idea for the first one.  Humm...

I think I would define myself as a skeptic as well, but I am wondering one thing about the people who have mentioned colonoscopies.  When you get one, you have to basically do a cleanse beforehand anyway.  Like don't eat for 24 hours and drink that chalky stuff.  I might be confused, but if that's true, it might be a reason that doctors don't see stuff in your colon.

The prep for a colonoscopy involves more of a diet than a fast; you can drink clear, fiber-free fluids (not just water). And you do get a laxative, but cleansing seems to involve constant laxatives (either fiber or an artificial one) and last for longer than the day or so that a colonoscopy requires. It seems like if this kind of "cleanse"(colonoscopy prep) on a person who's likely to have been a meat-and-potatoes sort of person there whole life produces a pretty, pink colon, there isn't too much stuck in there anyway. I would think someone on a substantially healthy diet would require less of a cleanse, not more, for this effect.

That makes sense...
