Running Addiction

Whenever I start running again, I get really addicted to it...like I'm constantly looking forward to it, even if my feet are all blistered up.... I think for me I just always feel so 'free' and nothing else gives that sort of high. Know what I mean? My favorite time to go is when it is cold and slightly dark, either early morning or early evening/late afternoon... :)>>>

Omg, I know how you feel.  I run in the morning in the more summer time... its so cold out now, that I don't go... and I really do miss it..
It clears my head for once and really refreshes my mind and body.

I just wish shoe shopping was easier... I've become so picky with my shoes... they have to be vegan... they can't have a ton of white, and they have to be running shoes... not to mention I'm a size 5.5 in most shoes!  They never carry that size... haha.

I loooove running too! Actually...running is like a boyfriend you fight with a lot for me *lol* Somedays, the running is so good and I am so happy, other days I hate running and just want to break up with it...but I always return...*sigh*

Teade--have you looked into New Balance shoes?!? Many of them are all man made materials--I have a really nice pair of cross trainers that I love from them!

When I'm running on a daily basis, I kind of dread it each day... but if I have to stay away (like after a blood donation), I just *feel* like running. Endorphins, man... natural opiates.

Almost every Saucony shoe (walking, running, cross-training, whatever) I have come across has been non-leather; they all have labels on the inside of the tongue. I've only come across leather ones occasionally.

I <3 running and get "addicted" too. And I definitely agree that it's best when it is slightly cold and dark. I think that also might be due to the fact that there are generally less people around at dusk/dawn, and I like to feel like the only person around a certain area when I run. *shrug* lol. Lamely, I have been incredibly inactive in the last 2 months and haven't been on a long run in weeks.

Tell me about it.

My track coach just told me on Saturday that I am now only allowed to run three days a week, and then Saturdays for track meets. So that's one long run a week, two days of sprints, and Saturday I only run two quarter miles. I love track, but I am starting to miss those long solitary runs on dark and cool summer nights.

That's great to hear about Saucony's. I love them. I am currently running in a pair, but didn't bother to check the label because I always figure they aren't vegan. I am all Saucony's now. Thanks faunablues.

I did notice that my VEGAN professor (yeah, I'm super psyched about it) was wearing Saucony's the other day, and I commented on how they are good shoes, that last a long time... didn't realize they were nice to animals too...

I remember reading about their non-leather-ness being more about quality/high-tech stuff. As in, mesh/etc breathes a lot better, which is better for running. Still, I'm not sure why most of their shoes use the small bit of synthetic where it does (and a few using leather) - they use synthetic rubber too, so maybe it's just a synthetic/high-tech = better kind of thing?
I can't *wait* til it's warm enough outside to go running in the morning again on the weekends, when no one's awake! I'm gonna run to the lake and then I'm gonna run out of breath, look at birdies, and run back and run out of breath all over again!
Ah, drugs...

I'm having the opposite problem now: lack of motivation! I haven't really been into running since the summer. I run about once or twice a week & the furthest I've ran lately is 4 miles. Now a really tough trail race is coming up in Feb & I am sooo not ready. I don't know if I should do it or not.

Mizunos are man made materials too- I was really happy to find that out!

I'm still at a love/hate relationship with running. I look forward to it as a challenge. But, I need to build up my cardio and my mental toughness more before it can be really addicting. Hopefully soon I'll join the fold... :)

My running has been off this whole new year! I just started running last spring so Im not exactly a pro--and I have absolutely no endurance--the longest I hve ever run at once was a 10k and that was in a race so there was some extra motivation...anywho--I keep trying to build up but the more I try the harder it gets--I'm besting 4 mi/day right now and consider that a HUGE accomplishment--any advice on how to improve? Are some people just not built for long runs?

yes, actually!  They are my favorite... sadly I can barely find my size... :( so I end up buying little boys' shoes which DO NOT last long!!
But I was told from shoe places that most running shoes aren't leather!  yay?

Oh, I have had such a relationship with running, sometimes I do wake up and dread it in a sense... like that I have to rush...
but I've also pulled sooo many muscles from not stretching, so everyone STRETCH, that's important!!

Other than that, we're tight

Just pick one day a week for your endurance run to increase your distance, and not the day after you do leg weights or some other hard workout. You usually run on the treadmill right? set the treadmill to 1 min/mile slower than you normally run & if you feel your heartrate go up & that you are breathing heavy, go even slower, and/or take a walk break for a minute.

I wish it weren't so cold.  Definitely not the type of person to go for a run in the middle of January so I haven't gotten to run much lately, which is really bad because I promised my sister I would run a marathon in June.  This guy is not near marathon shape right now...I really hope I can get going in the next week or some because it's 5 months from today  :-\

Just take it one step at a time and pace yourself. If endurance is what gets you, don't expect too much out of yourself at one time! Running is very cumulative. I found that if I focus on my body or breathing when I'm running I get tired a lot quicker. Just let your mind go somewhere else. I actually will have long debates with myself over some matter or another when I'm running, and before I know it I've been gone for two hours. My point: you'll get there!

Oh, I usually run on a schedule (like before work) and those are normally the times I feel I can keep running more... but can't. :(

haha.

I'm completely and totally addicted to running also..to the point where I should probably watch it sometimes.

I myself consider 4 mi/day to be pretty darn good. Just make sure your shoes keep up with you... they wear down awfully fast the more you run (you're supposed to replace them every 300? 500 miles?). And yeah, I think some people are just better at doing crazy marathons. Some people aren't. Personally, I can tell you that I'm not a natural runner. I've always been terrible - in middle school when they had us run once a week (and we had to repeat the next day if we got more than 13 min/mile) I was always running with all the very obese people the following day... And I wasn't obese.  :-\ So right now I'm doing 2-2.5mi/day. I had been doing 3 mi/day, but started getting some awful tendinitis.

I invent self-glorifying stories while running as distraction. Is that normal?  ::)

LOL--should try this.

As I've discussed on Boot Camp I'm currently in the middle of the Couch-to-5K running program, and running five minutes at a time is a huge hurdle for me. My body's just not completely comfortable with it yet.

Last time I ran, I found that the song that got me through my five-minute spurt was by the Traveling Wilburys (a super-group of Roy Orbison, Bob Dylan, Tom Petty, and George Harrison). It's not particularly fast, but it was one of those songs that told a story. I have heard the song five million times but tried really hard to focus on the words this time... and five minutes was, well, easier. (I won't say it flew by...  :-\)

I'm training for a 4-mile run, and I'm now determined to load my play list with Traveling Wilburys and Bob Dylan, and all those good storytellers from around that time. Funny, because I"m a musician, and likely to focus on beat and tempo instead. But no, it's just an engaging story that does it. Maybe next I just need a good podcast...  ;D

typical ex-dancer story about having torn up my knee & not being able to run anymore ...

... but do find the same thrill / addiction to swimming laps (regular cardio sessions several times a week); that release, the burst of energy that follows a good workout! yeah!

Thank everyone! Great sugestions!

I probably should get a new pair of shoes--I definitely replace them often enough--and I also take GOOD care of my gym shoes, they have their own special bag and are ONLY worn inside!! I think I have over 300 miles on these ones though...I was jus thinking the other day that I had probably hit my limit with them...but I hate breaking in new running shoes! *sigh*

I know this isn't the best recommendation, but I usually wait until I start feeling a tinge in my knees, then think, oh I need new shoes- duh.

But you don't necessarily need to get new shoes as soon as you hit the 300 mile mark. If you are a lighter person and/or have a neutral foostrike you can get away with replacing them less frequently. Just take a good look at them. Look at the bottom, are they visibly worn anywhere? feel the inside, is it still cushiony? put them flat on a table, do they lean to the side? Have you been getting any aches in any joints? If you said no to all those questions, they are probably still fine.
