Excessive packaging.

Do you ever choose not to buy a product because of excessive packaging?
This weekend at my local HFS I saw that Fantastic Foods has taken their little soup cups, which are a paper board type container, & have wrapped them with an additional cardboard package. ARGHHH!!! >:(
Recently White Wave started selling one gallon of Silk at a slightly better price than 2 separate half gallons, but all they did was package two 1/2 gallon cartons inside a cardboard box. So you get a better price, but you end up with way more packaging. ARGHHHH!!!! >:( >:(
Why do manufacturers continue to add additional packaging to items? It just ends up in the recycle bin or the landfill.
Off to write a letter -- or two!
This annoys me as well. Example is some of those 100 calorie snack packs. Some of them are the exact same food that you get in the big package except they divided it up in serving sizes for you. I mean, if you want Pringles, just buy a can of Pringles!
I agree! In my experience Epson printer cartridges are a big offender. If you buy them in a regular supply store, they come in a cardboard box and the cartridge is also shrink-wrapped. If you buy them in a dept store or superstore, the cardboard box comes in a VERY strong plastic covering which has a hanger on it, but also doubles the size of the package, and is MURDER to get open! Plus a little instruction leaflet in its own side pocket. The plastic requres scissors and a large dose of patience to get open without actually damaging the cartridge.
I ordered a Gorillapod for my camera about 6 months ago, and they offered a "packaged" or "unpackaged" version. The unpackaged version even cost a few dollars less! It seems like you can only buy it unpackaged on their website now:

They're also a 1% for the planet member too. I didn't know any of this until I went to buy a Gorillapod, but it was a pleasant surprise :) Maybe I'll write them a letter to thank them.

Grrrrr, at C0stco, we used to buy a multi-pack of a certain brand of crackers, but we quit b/c of their CRAZY packaging. It was a large shrink-wrapped cardboard box, containing 4 individually shrink-wrapped cardboard boxes of crackers. Inside each individual box was a shrink-wrapped roll of crackers. How insane is that?!
We try to buy as much as possible in bulk from our co-op b/c we can reuse tupperw@re or glass jars (you tare the container before you fill it, and then they can weigh it accurately). The only justification I have about excessive packaging is that if I buy it, at least I know all the paper/cardboard is recycled (we can't recycle plastic wrapping here). Still...
One of our supply vendors just recently switched their packaging material from styrofoam peanuts to peanuts made of puffed cornstarch. They dissolve in the sink under a little water.
Now if they could only make them edible, then we'd truly be understanding the cradle-to-cralde mantra. ;D
Lezly~ See Fired-up Fridays V!!
What makes me crazy is that, at my grocery store, the organic produce is always overpackaged. Most of the standard produce is loose, but the organic stuff is on a styrofoam tray with plastic wrap or in a big plastic clamshell box. It leaves me in a quandary!

Not excusing them, but the reason for that may be that if they don't keep the organic stuff set properly aside, they might make the mistake of not charging you five times the price of regular produce. ;)
Please remember that Pringles are made by Proctor and Gamble. They test on animals. The P & G stand for pain and gain.
Everything I buy is overpackaged. I like to throw away alot of trash.
hey there pcross! see you are new to the boards. PLEASE introduce yourself on the "ROLL CALL" thread!!!
Everything I buy is overpackaged. I like to throw away alot of trash.
Would that be sarcasm or are we just out trolling today?

Hmmmm...year+ old thread and a first time poster--I hate to be negative but I'm betting troll :( oh well--it's a good thread that reminds us all to be careful what we buy and to reduce, reuse and recyle! (And if you are not a troll I'm super sorry and welcome to the community :) )
And that user has no vegweb profile. I am betting troll. But not a very good one, it sounded more sarcastic than argumentive.

Maybe it was there first attempt at trolling--you know I bet it's harder than we think coming up with lame things to say--oh wait..it not...my bad! ;D
Someone could always "report to admin"...she can check into it better than anyone. It's not like you're being "ugly" or unkind...just looking out for the community.

Has anyone seen "the story of stuff"? I thought the theory of the only way to make the economy work being constantly increasing consumption was interesting...and scary. http://www.storyofstuff.com/
