So disappointed. . .
Well, I'm sure this rant isn't goint to be all that interesting to you all, but you're going to hear about it anyway...
Today I bought some kala namak (black salt), finally, to make this recipe:
http://www.theppk.com/recipes/dbrecipes/index.php?RecipeID=90
I was excited--the salt really, really smells like hard boiled eggs. And when you taste a tiny portion of it, it tastes like hard-boiled eggs sprinkled with salt.
So I open up the tofu that has an expiration date 2 weeks from today....and it smells horrid...I smell it again, and actually considered going through with the recipe because I've been really waiting to make this recipe for some time, especially with the black salt. It smells like something is dead in the package the second, third, fourth time I sniff it. So I throw it out but I can still smell it, so I put it in a freezer bag and throw it out again. Tofu has never been bad for me before the expiration date--why now? At least I can't smell it anymore.
I would go out and make a special trip to buy another package of tofu (that's how much I wanted to try this recipe), but my husband is gaming (roleplaying) tonight at someone else's house--so I have no transportation (we have one car). If it weren't over 100 degrees outside, I might bike to the store 4 miles away. But it's getting dark and I don't live in the safest area of town, either. I considered garbanzo beans instead of tofu, as I love "chicken" salad sandwiches made with garbanzos, but I really wanted to make it with tofu. Besides, I just used my last bag of garbanzos 2 days ago to make hummus. I bought more dry beans today, but they haven't soaked yet and I don't want to wait that long. So, I'm just goint to have to make something else for my dinner tonight. I had some freshly baked homemade bread to serve it on and everything...sigh...end of rant. >:( Sorry and thanks for listening.
Say it wasn't meant for you to have that tonight. I always say that. Make another new recipe. When life gives you lemons make lemonade. ;)
awwww...that sux!
i know how it is to have horribly-spoiled tofu! ugh! be glad you can no longer smell it anyway! :-X
where did you find the black salt? that sounds interesting.
I'm intrigued by the black salt. Where did you find it?
I'm sorry to hear about your culinary woes. Things like that happen to me regularly. I think that's why I can't really cook. I get too dejected to stick it out in the kitchen.

::In the most whiny voice you can imagine:: But I don't like lemonade! Just kidding...I made some "dump" chili with stuff I had in the fridge and some cornbread--it's in the oven right now.
I'd been eyeing black salt for awhile now, but it's kinda expensive and I'm pretty cheap. You can buy it on the internet, but I bought it at Whole Foods today because I was in the neighborhood and there it was on the shelf taunting me (and my husband was saying "just get it, just get it" over my shoulder). Spent 6.49 for 4 oz, which was ok because I didn't have to pay shipping. I've also heard you can buy it in Indian grocery stores as it is frequently used in Indian cooking (at least that's what I've read and its says so on the jar).

LOL
Oh man! That sucks! I would have saved the tofu and returned it to the store for a refund! To be on the safe side check your refrigerators temp gage, it may have accendetally been turned up causing improper temperatures and spoilage!
Hope you get to make the recipe soon and that it tastes all the better for the wait! :)
My mom mailed us some black salt (I think she got it at TJ's or whole foods for those looking for it)
It does taste and smell like a hardboiled egg!!
We tried it on tofu scramble and it was good, but not as eggy as you'd think though.
I have NO idea what else to put it on....
Hey Hopfrog!
What brand was your tofu? The EXACT same thing happened to me this week! Mine was this off brand my husband picked up called Adzuki or something like that (sounded Japanese and started with an A)
. I described it the exact same way...like something died! Mine didn't expire till mid-august, and it had never happened to me either.
We live pretty near the store, and they took it back. Luckily I had another thing of tofu to use at the moment. I thought about using the gross tofu for a minute thinking it was just me, but I literally could not get the smell out of my hands. The guy who took it back was rather grossed out too. I bet he will never eat tofu!
It would be interesting to find out of it was the same kind!
mine that went bad was the Nasoya brand. it too, was not expired...it was prob. somehow opened by the time i bought it. ive hed those packages leak on me before.
